Looking to buy a new 22LR auto and have narrowed it down to these two. I bought my dad a Mosquito sport model and absolutely love it but before I buy another I am curious about the new Smith &Wesson M&P22. The Mosquito I know has a bad rep but mine ran flawlessly with Mini Mags as per instructions. Down side is that the mags are expensive and it wasnt the most accurate gun I have ever fired. I have read good things about the M&P but it is 4.1 in length vs the mosquitos 4.9 barrel. Just dont know! Anyone out there shot both and can give me their honest opinion? Thanks

I had a sig Mosquito, jammed every third shot if not every other one. I owned it for over a year so back at the factory the quality control guy told me that it was mine to fix. Tried to get the gunsmith here in Austin to fix it said he had seen alot of them just like mine and would not touch it. Sold it to a friend for 125 dollars and told him he was buying an expensive hammer. Piece of junk. Tried everything they told me to try from different ammo to other spring no luck. Worst gun I have ever bought would not recommend Sig arms to any one.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I had read alot of stories just like yours on the Mosquito. The one I bought my dad was used and priced just right so I took the chance. I have also read where some people have bought them and had zero probs or that they get better the more rounds you feed thru them and I suspect the first owner of mine took care of that for me because mine ran great! I have noticed they have made some changes to the Mosquito line and some models have been discontinued and that they have added a few new ones.

Two .22s I really don't care about. Is this for cheaper practice for a non-reloader? If so, pick the one that matches the operating system of your carry. If you carry an M&P, the answer should be obvious.

Just a plinker? My Rugers ain't broke nor or they very ammo picky. the SR22 shoots 2" 25 yard groups and the Mk2 shoots 1/2" 25 yard groups (got optics on it). I'm going to get me a Browning Buckmark next, I think. I like .22 pistols. :D

My Wife was so happy with her M&P 22 she baought an M&P 45..Now she can train for half the price. My neighbor liked my wifes M&P 22 so much he went out and bought one the next day!!! S&W stands behind their guns and I appreciate how they stand behind the military and police with discounts/rebates. S&W is a great American legend/company. I would recommend the M&P...

Yeah im just looking for a fun gun thats cheap to shoot. My carry gun is a 1911 but I want something a little different but still has an everyday autoloader feel to it and with that said im not really looking for a conversion unit for my 1911. I like the Ruger MK2s but not so much the SR22s. Python69 has the M&P22 been pretty accurate for you guys?

Ruger 22/45 matches the 1911 grip angle, for what THAT'S worth.

Thanks MCGunner you are correct about the 22/45 that has not been completely ruled out.

I don't like the rear sight on the M&P 22 but is a nice shooting 22 and I would think it will out shoot the mosquito.

Is the M&P 22 made by the same people that make the Walther P22? I have heard horror stories of both the P22 and Mosquito.

I had a S&W 22A which was pretty decent but I didn't care for it after while and I needed $.

Have an M&P22 and soon a Buck Mark Camper SS with FO. I really enjoy shooting the M&P...everyone does...not the most accurate but matches the M&P9 FS well...excellent trainer...and a ton of fun!!!

Yes I believe it is made over seas by the same people behind Walther. I too have heard bad things about the Walther P22 but im thinking the M&P is held to a little higher standards.

Well if its reliable, fun and is slightly more accurate then the mosquito then I dont see what more someone could want out of a 22lr except maybe a match gun or something like that. The Mosquito was alot of fun but it only came with one 10 round mag which ment I was spending more time reloading then shooting! Mags for the Mosquito are $45 to $50 which would prevent me from buying more.

If you're looking for a 22 that is very reliable and accurate, your best bet among all those mentioned would be the Ruger 22/45, Mk II or III. .

Instead of buying a 22/45 that has a grip angle of a 1911 but is a lousy Ruger, why not buy a 1911 22? They cost about the same, are fun to shoot, fairly accurate, and function well.

I only have one Ruger but it's a 22/45 and I would hardly call it "lousy". It's more accurate than I and after the first 100 rounds or so I can't recall it malfunctioning. Steady diet of Federal bulk going 1000+ rounds between cleanings.

Now if you are wanting a 1911 trainer I agree that a conversion kit or dedicated .22LR 1911 could be a better way to go.

I wouldnt call the 22/45 lousy either, for what its intended purpose is, im sure its a fun target gun! I went ahead and put the S&W22 on layaway. I decided that not only would it be fun and cheap at the range but its probably going to be my truck gun. I know its under powered as a self defense gun but I wouldnt want to get shot with one, plus I dont want to risk on someone breaking into my vehicle and stealing my beloved 1911.
