VLD Bullet Seating, suggestions and a DIY

mwsenoj May 8, 2012, 10:31 PM I just started using Berger 75gr VLDs in my Rem 700 SPS tac with a 1 in 9" twist (yes they group well and stabilize in that "slow" of a twist) but I was getting a ring around the nose of the bullets where they contacted the bullet seating shank in my Hornady seating die and they also jammed a bit. Frustrated, I went to Sinclair and almost ordered a comp seating die with a special VLD seating shank when I decided to redneck engineer something to see if it would work. I chucked the shank from the Hornady die into my drill and grabbed a spear pointed wood drill bit and slowly removed some material. I increased the angle of the cone that seats the bullet and then I used some white diamond polishing compound to smooth and polish it. I charged the first case and dialed in the seating depth and tried it out. No marking or jamming at all. I saved myself about $120 in a die and a shank. I haven't been able to see how consistent it seats because my shop is at my parents ranch and I had to leave before I could load up and measure a few, but I am headed there now to tinker around with it.
All that being said, anyone else have a quick fix for seating VLD bullets in standard dies?

Jdillon May 8, 2012, 11:45 PM Redding makes a seating plug for their dies specifically for VLD bullets. Load Berger VLD's for several calibers and the VLD seating plugs work well. Don't know if they will fit Hornady dies.

I bought the standard one (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/712388/redding-bullet-seating-micrometer-9083-223-remington-22-250-remington-220-swift) for .223, and it works well. I like to be able to dial back and forth for different bullets. It left a light mark on the bullets, as their seater stems ten to do, but I polished the inside edge of the stem and it leaves no mark now.
I'll check to see if they will fit a Hornady die.
Walkalong May 9, 2012, 07:31 AM Nope, won't work.
I suspect you could chuck up the Hornady stem in a drill press or lathe, slightly modify the entrance and polish to get rid of the mark on the bullets. Perhaps not. I do not shoot any VLD bullets, so am unfamiliar with seating them.
