Wildyams May 8, 2012, 10:32 PM Hey guys, I'm looking for a little advise here.
A guy I work with is offering to sell me a S&W 29-4 44 mag blued with a 3" barrel. the guy said it has been back to the s&w pro shop and had the trigger re-done, its really smooth, the cylinder locks tight and its in overall great shape.
it has the serial number prefix of BDZ 2xxx can anyone tell me the approximate date it was made?
I know without pictures it would be hard to tell, but what kind of value do you think a gun like this would have?
Thanks

Jim Watson May 8, 2012, 10:40 PM I don't know the year and I won't guess a resale value, but I suggest you get him to let you shoot before you buy. A 3" .44 magnum will be a real handful.
Wildyams May 8, 2012, 10:46 PM he did let me borrow it, i shot some 44 spl through it and the recoil was not bad at all.
Ron James May 8, 2012, 11:18 PM If I am interpreting the S&W book correctly, Prefix BDY-BDZ was used in May1989.

Dr.Rob May 9, 2012, 01:37 AM My 'gut' feeling is 3" SW 29's were not terribly common. While it was a factory option they weren't made in great numbers. In 30 years you could end up with a collector's piece.
forindooruseonly May 9, 2012, 02:36 AM Just out of curiosity, is it a round butt or square butt? A round butt 3" model 29 would really appeal to me...
AFDavis11 May 9, 2012, 05:42 PM Man, that sounds like a nice gun.
Wildyams May 9, 2012, 10:26 PM Its a square butt. Would anyone be able to put an approximate value range on it?
BADSBSNF81 May 10, 2012, 07:41 PM If it is a full lug and has a unflued cylinder it is a 1989 3" Special. If your friend has the box the product code should read 101251. A little over 2500 made. Depending on condition, accessories, box, papers, etc., and your location you could be in 500 -1200 USD range.
