What is the difference btw match and standard primers and is it worth the extra $1.99/100 primer?

Thanks

Generally speaking, manufacturing and component tolerances are more closely controlled for Match primers. In some cases, the cup material is also a little different than standard primers to ensure bang every time.

If your just using them for range work or plinking, then I'd say NO, they're not worth the additional cost. If you're a bnechrest shooter that demands the utmost in consistency and reliability, that's different.

In Federals case, they also use the most experienced workers to make them.

How good are you and your gun? Lots of things make a far greater difference.

I've loaded a lot with both, and even tested them without a powder charge to see if there was an audible, or any other noticable variation between them. For my test I used CCI LR BR and CCI LR and did observe a noticable difference. I tested at night using a 44 mag. case fired from a Super Black Hawk so I could easily hear, and or, see any difference, and I also tested in .270 win. cases fired from a 700 action. I was pretty amazed to find a shot to shot consistency that was audibly, and visibly, far more consistent, and seemingly more potent than standard primers.

Of course a more determining method would be to test them using equiptment that can precisely measure the elements of the detonation, thus providing a measurable comparision of heat and pressures produced from each component. But yes, I personally feel match grade or BR are not the same consistency.

All that matters is what they do to accuracy. For maybe 99% of reloaders - and rifles - the differences on target are too small to make a difference. Including me and mine. I often use 'em anyway. ??

Regarding accuracy, I can't honestly say I've noticed a difference. Bt then again, if I were a competitor I would certainly use them all the time. I consider myself a pretty fair marksman and often lay down 1/2" groups at 200 yds. using just the standard primers. So personally, I really can't justify the added cost of BR primers.

I use them when I compete, and I can't honestly say that I can tell the difference...but....If I lose a match by a point or two while using reg primers, I would have the annoying question in the back O' my head asking "if I used match primers, would I have picked up those needed points?" Lol
