National Postal Meter M1 Carbine - Deal or no deal?

A local shop has a National Postal Meter M1 Carbine. I'm a little out of the loop on current Carbine values so I want to figure out if this is a good price or too high.

Barrel - Buffalo Arms 9 1943
Adj sight - On right side - JAO 71660060
Flat bolt - didn't find any markings
bayonet lug barrel band
"M" marked mag release
flip safety
Walnut stock - No cartouches I could find. I think it's a M1 stock, could be a M2 though as I can't always tell unless they are side by side
2 rivet handguard
No import marks i could find

I wasn't able to take it down, btw. Maybe later.

The rifle is obviously an arsenal rebuild with the flip safety, bayonet lug, and what appears to be a "new-ish" walnut stock.

The metal is about 95%. Probably a refinish, but looks near new. The only shiny spot is where the bolt rides on the receiver.

The wood is pretty nice as well, with a few minor dings/marks

Bore looks good as does the muzzle (no visible dings)

My guess is this is an arsenal rebuild that saw very little use before going into storage and very little use since then as well.

The shop wants $800. My gut says that's high, but, like I said, I'm not as up on current values, especially on NPM.

Any thoughts?

i would be incredibly tempted. i dont have a carbine nor know much about them except that when i went to get my garands at the south cmp they had tons of them and now i dont think they have any.

I'm not scared by refinishes. I don't ever think; "What if I have to sell this gun one day?", because I don't ever plan on selling it. Particularly if I had another carbine to be next to my grandfather's Inland, I would mod it and shoot the heck out of it.

Sounds like a nice rifle, but strikes me as an "average" price. Me being the cheap so-and-so that I am, I'd probably float them an offer.

My LGS has a really beat up, sad, tired looking carbine for sale at 750, they refused my offer of 650. im out.

I would say about right. And most M1's are rebuilds at some point. With CMP out of them and the Korean import ban, probably about right.

Our local gun/pawn has a couple of carbines for sale an Inland and an S'G' $950 for each. I suspect they would take in the $800 range as the manager told me he knows they are over priced. The Inland for sure, but he might pull $950 on the S'G'. I already have one of each and they are fun to shoot!

I'd buy the P.M. you describe for $800 otd or w/ tax and a couple of mags or a box of .30cal.
I don't see them getting any cheaper around here.

Just going by your description, that's not a bad deal. I'd offer $700 cash and see where it takes you. They're certainly not going down in price, and that one sounds relatively clean.

They are not going to get any cheaper and they don't really make anything quite like it now except the mini-14 of course and I'd rather have the M1 any day.

I wasn't able to get it today. If it's still there on Monday I'm going to try and haggle a bit with the manager and probably get it.

I do have a couple GI guns and a Planfield, so it's not like I HAVE to have it. If I do get it I'll sell the Planfield to recoup some of the cost.

Don't lie.......you know you have to have it. You're going to be stewing all weekend and ready to buy on Monday! I got a minty Quality Hardware post-war rebuild about 10 years ago for $600, so if this gun is in very good shape $800 sounds reasonable. Check the rifling.

I hadn't realized they'd gone up that much. I picked up a re-arsenaled 5-digit Inland a few years back for $450 and thought it was high. The one before that was a Winchester I got for $110! I wish I'd kept that one.
