Looking for places to start.

Obviously there are lots of good places to start in the manuals.

If I was just going to point and load, so to speak... I would choose 168g BTHP's and RL15 for targets to 600 yds, and 165g BTSP's with RL15 for hunting.

I'm sure it wouldn't be horrible...but I'm looking for some advice none-the-less.

School me.

I'm not realistically looking at anything over 400 yards for either target or hunting. I got the longer BBL because it came packaged with a nice heavy rifle , and a two-stage trigger. It looked very attractive with the laminate stock...I'll be honest. Being able to fantasize about 600+ yard shots is nice, and its nice to have the capability in theory....but I'm not likely to do a lot of it.

Try 42.0 gr Reloader 15 with the 168 gr SMK's. My loading for MY 26" bbl 308 run from 42.0 gr to 45.0 gr MAX for 168 and 175 gr SMK's and 178 gr AMAX.

I also use IMR 4895. My loading is 41.5 gr with a 168 gr SMK for my National Match load.

I was thinking about the same charge, but not the same bullet.

I like Varget somewhat better then RL15. But I am a big fan of the 160 gr bullets in a .308. I bought mine for target shooting and boy can it shoot the 168 gr bullet.
