Powder Hopper Material

Quick question for you guys, what material are most powder hoppers made out of? I need to stop by the hardware store and make some new ones for my Pacific loader as they're cracked apart.

I'm sure it doesn't really matter all that much what I use but it's better to be safer than sorry.

The hopper material varies from different makes and models. Most of them are a compromise to juggle ease of manufacture, chemical resistance, and level of transparency. We all know that leaving powder in your measure can sometimes result in etching of the hopper.

Based on its appearance and vulnerability to acetone solvent, I suspect the red translucent part of my Lee PPM hopper is blowmolded acrylic.

If you're making your own, you can use w/e you want. FWIW, HDPE is what they use for powder containers. Any polyethylene, polypropylene, or possibly PET (soda bottle plastic) is going to be etchproof and can come in varying degrees of transparency. But the problem is you can't really glue these plastics, and they aren't readily available in tube shapes.

Plexiglass (acrylic) is easily purchased in tubes of varying diameters and transparency and can be glued or solvent welded.

You might look for a reusable water bottle made of high density polypropylene of the right shape. The kind that cyclers use. They even come in shaded grey or other colors. You'd have to rig up some way to connect it. Or in a pinch a PET soda/water bottle and duct tape? :)

How about aluminum, brass, or steel? Buy some sheet and roll it into a tube. Couple of pop rivets, and Bob's your uncle.

If you contact Quick-Measure, he might sell you a powder hopper of any length, or tell you where he gets his, which he buys in 6-foot lengths.

Or just head to the local head shop for a "water pipe extender" Same acrylic. Its still plastic :)

A call to Hornaday might net you another that will fit. They bought out Pacific and still use that design for their powder measures. I have a buddy that has a new Hornaday that is a twin to my older Pacific with the only difference being the label as far as I can tell.
