45 LC and HS6

Regarding the 45LC I currently use Hodgon Titegroup. In general 7.2 gr under a 200 or 230 gr bullet.

It works pretty good. With the 200 gr bullet and 7.2gr TG I get a MV of around 950out of my 5.5" Ruger and about 1200 out of my 20" Win. I've never measured MV with the 230 gr bullet as I almost exclusively use 200. I wanna go to a heavier bullet though as I believe that the historical bullet weight that the 45LC was designed for was 250gr and that the heavier bullet will be more accurate out of my 45LC guns.

I wanna experiment some. I'm thinking that HS6 might be a better powder to use for 45LC - especially for the rifle round as it is a slower burning powder. But HS-6 burns quick enough that it should work well with the pistol too - especially if I go to a 250 gr bullet. Another alternative might be HP-38.

Comments? Anyone have experience with using HS6 for 45LC? (I know about H-110 - not interested in making really hot 45LC loads so please no comments on that particular powder).

That ^^^ is there because the warm load I am going to recommend is NOT safe in the SAA types.

I have not used HS6, but I have used 231/HP38 and did not really care for it.

Unique has been BY FAR the best for me in standard 45 Colt loads. It has been the most accurate, least leading and just consistent shooting. Try starting at 7.5 and work up to 9 in .5 grain increments until you hit the speed or recoil you want. 8 should give around 800-850 in your pistol, up around 9 should hit 950ish which is what the original black powder loads were loaded to with 250 grain bullets. Your guns are safe up into the 10.5 grain range.

For warm loads I had good luck with Blue Dot, 13.5 under a 250-270 lead bullet has been really nice, pretty stout too. It should hit somewhere around 1050-1100 out of your Ruger and maybe 1350-1400 out of the rifle.

Hope this helps.

I hear ya about Unique and I've wanted to try it but it's a flake powder and doesn't consistently measure from the Lee Powder drop I use on my Turret Press. So it's a no go.

The HS-6 loads at the Hodgdon site look intriguing, but I got accuracy for my brother's 45Colt wimp loads with Unique:
6 gr. Unique, 300 gr. cast .454" copperized National Bullet.

Lighter bullets hit low.
2400 did not give the groups.

I've used quite a lot of HS-6, Unique, and Blue Dot in the .45 Colt.

For factory equivalent to a bit warmer I prefer Unique; for the next level I prefer Blue Dot.

I've used HS-6 in .44 calibers and this spring will try some moderate loads in .45 Colt.

I think you'll really love it, low pressures and good moderate velocities make for enjoyable shooting sessions.

I really like it.

I tried using blue dot in .45 colt.
It shot well, but was dirty beyond belief.
