I purchased some bulk brass awhile back and while sorting I found a handfull of brass with the above headstamp. The primer does not look crimped but there is some blue dye around it. Looking down into the brass the flash hole looks very small. I am afraid that I will break the pin on my die if I try to decap the brass. Any ideas on what brass this is.

thx

If you have purchased an entire bag full of them, then I suggest you order an extra decapping pin and turn it down until it fits. If it's just 50-100, you can decap each case with a nail, then ream out the flashholes with a drill. If it's just a handful, you can just toss 'em.

Ordinarily it might not seem like it's worth the effort. But look at it this way. You know they're truly once-fired. So if you have a lot of them, it might be worth trying. I have a bag of 120 DAG cases I reamed out. They were just too pretty to throw away. They look like new brass, even on the inside. I've since discovered that the brass gets thick towards the base and doesn't like Berry's HB bullets, but that's fine. They're tagged for premium HPs, anyway.

Check them with a magnet and make sure they aren't copper clad steel before reloading them. S&B does such a good job with their copper wash, it's impossible to tell the steel cases from the brass without the use of a magnet.

Hope this helps.

I keep a big magnet in the shed for just that, and Fred is right, the cases look just like brass. I couldn't tell them apart by looking, even with them side by side.
