Hey all,

I watched The Avenger's last night (family friend's bday), and I was disappointed by the movie's use of firearms effects.

Not only was the volume up WAY to loud (I'm more comfortable at the range next to a breaked 300RUM than I was in that theater), but the gunshots were pathetically quiet. In the scene where the BGs are trying to get onto the bridge of the flying aircraft carrier, the voices and yelling were far louder than the AR15s, Saiga 12s, Glocks, and S&W M&Ps. The characters would be yelling while shooting, and the gunshots would be mere "tat tat..tat..tatatats" as they are yelling.

Shouldn't things be a little more realistic than that? You'd think the guy from Hurt Locker (played the archer guy in Avengers) would've spoken up ;)

Things certainly looked/sounded real when they were filming it..look at those muzzle flashes!

Don't even get me started on the gasoline "detonations" :D

It's a movie for entertainment. If you go looking for every detail to be 110% factually correct, you shouldn't be there. Hate to say it but ahh, it IS fictional. Think...Marvel super heroes...comic books...;)

Maybe the effects were a little unrealistic, but Scarlett Johansson did demonstrate proper safety with a handgun. Finger off the trigger, kept pointed away from the good guys, etc. not to mention looking pretty good... :D

When I watch movies on DVD, I'm always moving the volume up and down. Turn it up to hear the dialog, lose your hearing when the FX start. Turn it down for that, can't hear what they're saying... or maybe I'm just old.

It's a movie about superheroes, do you really expect everything to be lifelike? I like my movies loud and thought it was great. I saw it at IMAX where they have a really nice sound system. I didn't notice anything odd with the sound effects on the guns.

I go to a move to follow the story and characters, not to get my ears blasted by gunshot noises. If anything they would detract from the quality of the movie. And honestly, in a super-hero movie complaining that the gunshot noises weren't loud enough? How about the implausibility of Iron Man, The Hulk, the Heli-carrier, and most of all Thor and Loki.

It's "The Avengers," not "Heat." To most ears, real firearm noises are distracting and harsh. So Sillywood has long manufactured gun noises from all sorts of odd sources including animal calls. It's still a rare film that uses the real sound, and usually only crime dramas that are trying to add to the verisimilitude.

To me, those noises mean one thing--the range is open!

My only firearm related comment was, "what's that cheap 3-9x40 Nikon scope doing on the nuclear powered plasma bazooka thingy?"

When Agent Coulson shoots Loki and says, "oh, that's what it does"

Haha, yeah, I do realize its just a movie, but its still interesting. I DID notice a lot of good gun-safety being demonstrated, there was a seen where a couple cops (maybe soldiers, dont remember) were running down the street and they had their boogerhooks off their triggers :)

Was the redhead dual-wielding G26s or G30s? Was hard for me to tell..maybe I was distracted :D

460Kodiak - I was just surprised by how quiet they were in comparison to other movies. They were EXTRA quiet, if you will.

We have to use the volume button all the time watching movies at home. Every now and then forget something from seeing it in the theater and get the crap scared out of us by the surround sound. The scene in I Am Legend with the lion? About gave my dog a heart attack; it was LOUD.

I told hubby they had to find the one woman on the planet who would appeal to every age man, and help them to not feel left out by all of the male eye candy :)

I need to watch Heat, apparently.

I have noticed in some shows lately (mainly NCIS:LA) that the gunshots are really loud, and that does suck when trying to watch it quietly at night. Despite the break from reality, I believe a movie should be able to maintain a consistent volume for what happens, i.e. not having to turn it up to hear dialog and down so you don't wake the person in the next room.

Commercials are even worse.

I've also noticed that a lot of shows lately have the finger off the trigger by trained folks (i.e. the FBI or the cops) but sometimes the average joe who uses a gun in his crime spree doesn't.

I think this is a good unrealism, it allows us to hear the dialogue over the gunshots.

My biggest firearm gripe is that Captain America used a 1911 in the Captain America film, but was deprived of it throughout the Avengers.

Its a movie, so take it for what its worth -- Entertainment.

Its a pretty cool movie for sure. I wouldn't judge their use of firearms and FX since its really more about the superheroes with superpowers.

I noticed that movies where the gunshots are realistiically loud use it sparingly to highlight tramatic events. I remember the most recent movie about the gangster Dillinger had good sound effects

Public Enemies? Great movie, great guns.

Unfortunately not Cesiumsponge ;)

Public Enemies was a great movie for sure. And I totally agree with the "equalize-the-volume-for-God's-sake" idea!

The film focused on superheros, not realism. Though I expect Captain America movies to have slightly more realistic gun handling and performance portrayal, since he was a soldier before all else.

As an aside, Captain America is easily my favorite Avenger. :)

It was exactly as it should have been, IMO. If movies had realistic volume levels, they wouldn't be worth watching, because dialogue wouldn't be heard.

.

In a movie that has a Hulk, two Gods, a man in a robot suit, and aliens from another planet you are worried about realism?

lol. I thought the movie was awesome and also found a new found admiration for Scarlett Johansen.

The quote you provided...easily one of my favorite issues of Daredevil, and one of the best storylines ever written for a comic book.

As for the OP: Really? You're complaining about the lack of realism of gunshot sounds in a comic book movie? That's like complaining about the lack of realistic foreplay in porn movies, or the lack of realistic Xenomorphs in "Alien" movies. Maybe you should just stick to watching The Military Channel.

I took my girlfriend to see it this weekend, and we both thought that it was easily one of the best movies we've seen in theaters in years. We go to the movies about once a month, and while there have been a few decent ones, none have made either one of us want to go back and watch it again, which we'll be doing next weekend. 'The Avengers' is one of the best comic book-based movies ever made, next to Christopher Nolan's 'Dark Knight' movies. Hopefully, the upcoming Spider-man movie will be just as good.

You watched an alien Norse god fly through the air by flinging his hammer and holding onto the thong.....another guy change into a giant green dude, hordes of who-knows-what fly out of a dimensional portal, A heart patient in a super iron suit, a hero-sicle from WWII in a flag suit, and a flying aircraft carrier......
Yet....what really concerned you through all of this was that the gunshots were not realistic? Seriously? ;)

"You'd think the guy from Hurt Locker (played the archer guy in Avengers) would've spoken up"

Why?, the guy's an actor. Having made a movie full of prop guns and blanks, doesn't mean he knows a thing about guns either.

Well, I thought it was a great movie. I do think that the little skysled invaders were wussy for aliens. They could be taken down by arrows and Glocks. If we had a bit of warning and moved in an armored division and airpower - they would have been eliminated as they came out of the portal and...

WAIT - it was a movie.

How come Nick Fury didn't carry a Judge.

I am waiting for Battleship for my next dose of military movie realism.

It's a fantasy movie and not a documentary about firearms.

You can't expect realism.

This one's too out of scope for a firearms forum.
