.22 Revolver

Hello folks,

Thought I would pick people's brains on this one:

Have recently picked up a 22 Colt Woodsman and loving it. Am thinking of getting a .22 revolver to compliment it.

Any ideas on what would be a good choice:

LGS has:

Astra Cadix - 4"
Colt Officers Match - 6"
Colt Trooper MkIII
Ruger Single 6
S&W 17-4 - 6"
Sauer & Sohn Competitor - 6"
Taurus 941 - 4"

(And a boxed Colt Golden Spike but that is more than a little pricey!)

Any thoughts on the above? Just looking for a heads up on any to avoid before hefting any.

ATB,

Scrumbag

I would go with one or more of the following:

Colt Officers Match - 6"
Colt Trooper MkIII
Ruger Single 6
S&W 17-4 - 6"

My favorite .22 revolver is a Colt Officers Model Target -- a slightly earlier version of the Officers Model Match.

I would buy the S&W M17.

Second choice would be the Colt Officer's Match.

If you want the Single-Action revolver (AKA "Cowboy Gun") then only way to go is the Ruger Single-Six.

For a double-action, the S&W M17.

My SA revolver is the 40th Year Single-Six Convertible; it has both .22LR & .22Mag cylinders.

I had an S&W pre-model number "Kit Gun" that I used to teach my kids how to shoot. Oldest son has taught his 3 daughters to shoot with it

I can vouch for the Single-Six. If it is a .22Mag convertible, even better.

The Single-Six has a decent trigger, and points well with a 6" barrel.

Vern has it:

I would go with one or more of the following:

Colt Officers Match - 6"
Colt Trooper MkIII
Ruger Single 6
S&W 17-4 - 6"

Any or all of those would do. I *have* a Ruger Single Six, because I grew up shooting a single-action .22 revolver, and when I saw this one, I had to have it. I *want* a S&W 17, because I love Kframe revolvers, and if I had one of those, I wouldn't have to reload as much. :D

My choice would be the S&W model 17.

S&W model 17. It was made for Bullseye shooters. Hard to beat.
Then you can add a Model 14 in .38 special that is the exact same configuration to add a little center fire fun.

Choice would depend on price, what you like, and feels good in your hand. But my preference would be the same as Vern Humphrey's. If I had to choose one, it would be the Colt Officers Model Match. Second choice is the S&W M17.

I have a MK III in .22lr. I really like it. It is a full sized gun, not a scaled down model.

Wow your LGS has a lot better selection of .22 revolvers than my LGS! From the ones you have listed I would go with the S&W Model 17 first, the Ruger Single Six second, and the Colt Trooper MK. III third.

Colt Officers Match - 6"
Colt Trooper MkIII
Ruger Single 6
S&W 17-4 - 6"
Among these four, this is a hard decision to screw up! What you need to decide is which you want "first". Unless it's an XR3 Old Model Ruger (1953-1962) I would go for either the Colt OMM or the S&W.

Another Colt to go with the Woodsman. Don't forget Troopers, Diamondbacks, and Official Police all came in .22 as well as a few others.

I'd get a Colt New Frontier 22 to go with it. You can still find them at reasonable prices.

Toss up between the S&W 17-4 or the Colt Officer's Match. That's my preferences of those available. I mean, you are trying to get something to compliment a Woodsman, so it'd better be nice!

S&W would be my first pick.

Stay away from the Taurus.

Smith colt or ruger. Can't really go wrong.

Thanks folks,

will go and "fondle" a few this weekend I think.

Am lucky with my LGS, seems to quite like revolvers and doesn't just do the "safe queen" examples either as it isn't really a concept I believe in.

I'd stick with Colt, Smith or Ruger. If you have and interestin the Single Six, maybe you should give the Single Ten a look. I have a single six and love it, but have to admit that reloading it is a bit of a pain. I'd prefer a revolver with a swing out cylinder.

I love the single 10. Definitely where I'd go for a .22lr revolver.

If are mlostly using the revolver in SA then go with the ColtOOMM. If youi plan on doing DA competition shoots then I would favor the S&W 17. I have both and shoot both.

As others have opined, either the Model 17 or the Officer's Match. Both are great, classic revolvers that will never be seen again.

It does seem odd, at least to me, that the prices of used revolvers are going through the roof, yet more manufacturers aren't producing revelovers.

I'd presume they'd sell? Well, decisions to make.

There is an old saying, "Good, cheap and fast. Pick any two."

A young lady said that to me and I said, "I'll go with good and cheap, Honey, and you take as looooooong as you like."

I'd go with the S&W 17 from that list, but I like my Model 18 (4" barrel).

Korth
May 19, 2012, 09:40 AM
Go for a Korth.
I know it is a controvesially discussed maker but it is the best built handgun I have ever owned. I would prefer not the actual series (which is the successor of the original Companie Korth) but the Model 1969, which have been made when Mr. Korth was still alive and running his company in the late 1960s/early 1970s. This Model has a SA trigger which can be adjusted and also the DA which can be adjusted. In Germany they can be found pretty often for reasonable prices (appr. 600,- to 800,- Dollars) at egun (where I also bought my Model 1969 used).
Good luck
uwe from Germany
BTW. Living close to Germany finding a Korth should be no problem ;-)

Well, I can't drive the Korth to work.

In the USA Korth revolvers go for truly insane prices.

Believe me in Europe they are no bargain either. Though I suppose a lot of gun for the money can mean you pay a lotta money...

with the exception of the scout series. While the scouts are fun guns, they don't have the finish of the double actions. Smiths are also fine but I have little trigger time with them. No one has suggested the H&R 999? Is it also more of a fun gun than a quality shooter? I don't have one but a break open 9 shot sure seems like fun.

Would happily have one but don't know of one for sale I'm afraid!

H&R 999s aren't found everywhere in the U.S. anymore and I'd bet they'd be found even less in Switzerland.

They are fun shooters though!

The only .22 handguns I have are revolvers...two Colts and a Charter Arms. For whatever reason the Charter Arms Pathfinder is my favorite to shoot...weird. :uhoh:

Cocked and Locked, What length barrel is on the new frontier? That is a nice looking set of revolvers! Do you have both cylinder for the Colt N.F. and if you do, how well do you like the .22 mag performance in that pistol with that barrel length? I have a Colt N.F. and tend to use the .22lr cylinder the most. I have no photos of that pistol, but after seeing your photo I'll have to take some of mine.

I don't remember the exact measurement of the N-F barrel and its in the safe. I'll try to snag time to measure it tomorrow. It's something over 4" but less than 5".

Nope...don't have the .22 mag cylinder. :(

Thanks for the comments!

So I have heard, and the 9 shot capacity looks nifty as well...

Anyway, will go to LGS this weekend and fondle a firearm or 2. I nominally "Need" some .22 ammo as I've put a fair bit through the Woodsman this week, so that is why I'm going to the gunsmiths... (at least, that is what I tell the rational part of my brain...)
