SP101 Used Pricing

So I just picked up a used SP101, 357, 3.06in Barrel, in great condition with box. In my excitement and lack of knowledge of revolver pricing, I think I overpaid substantially, I was just curious what the average used pricing is on these. I also noticed they seem to be a little difficult to find lately, which might contribute to the pricing.

Lately they have been selling on gunbroker for $375-500 used. I was very upset when I missed the one that sold for $375...

Ok, then I am not feeling that bad, I was on the high end of that($489), but I supported a local shop.

That's not a bad price where I am, they have been hard to find.

Got my 3" new for $429 last year, now they sell $459 new here in Atlanta.
Picked up a used 2" for $350.
Usually they seem to be around $400-$425 on Armslist in GA.

Amazing how much the price on these guns has gone up in the past few years. Not even 2-3 years ago used ones were going for under $400, and new ones were about $450.

I just picked up one for $350 plus tax at my local gunshop, no box but it did come with the original grips and a set of hogue grips. Lowest price I've seen in this neck of the woods.

So depending on who you ask I either got an ok deal, or screwed. Amazing on how things vary. I am very happy with it, but wish I had done my research.

On a different note, I'm not a fan of Hogue grips so if one of you would like them shoot me a pm and I'll ship them to you (free) - Jesse 8 gets them.

Don't feel too bad. Pricing can vary wildly by region.
You can generally expect to pay somewhat more for a given item in, say, California or the Northeast than you would in the Deep South.
I could assume you are in Maine - but that's still an assumption. :)
The SP-101 in 3", while not rare, is a fairly popular sidearm. $489 used is not as good as you saw 5 or 10 years ago... but then again, what handgun is? If you did overpay, it's not by an obscene amount. Basically - if it works good, you done good.
[EDIT: Plus, as you say, you supported your LGS. I will gladly give my local guy 10% over Web pricing to help him out; YMMV.]

I was at one point willing to sell mine (thankfully my mind changed) was asking 475, with holster and 2 speed loaders. Love this little gun, carry it as a bug every so often now
Shot placement is King, penetration is Queen, but a wide wound channel is the Ace in the hole.

Indeed I am from Maine. I am super happy with the gun, I will chock it up to regional variation and enjoy it.

In the last four years, the price of gas has doubled, the price of milk has doubled, and the price of good used handguns has gone up as well.
It's because the value of the dollar has dropped. No mystery here.

From another Rob in Maine, congrats and enjoy your purchase. A few extra bucks will long be forgotten in time.

Saw one on a local forum this morning private party asking $475.00 and will probably get it fairly quick when they do come up for sale usually sell pretty fast in these parts.
Of course our 8.1% sales tax and $25.00 BGC really help private party sales.

My .357 SP was only $378 in good shape, but keep in mind, that was without Hogue grips. IMO, the stock SP101 grips are inadequate for anything beyond a moderate load, so good aftermarket grips are kind of a necessity. That adds on another $20 or so.

I have been looking for a 2" 357 in my area and have had no luck at all, the only ones I can find seem to be $475 and up.
I will have to keep looking I suppose.

I paid $425 for mine 4 months ago, NIB, 3.06" barrel, love it. I had an action job done on it, another $60, DA now as smooth as SA. This part of town, most are in that same general price range, you did alright.

I bought a used SP-101 .357 with a 2.25" barrel and bobbed hammer for $381 (including shipping) on GunBroker a few months ago. It has the stock grips. I bought a Wolff spring kit, but haven't installed it yet.

I paid $499 for a 3" SP101 about a year ago, NIB at the LGS. I held out for about 6 months to get the 3" over 2" (which seemed abundant compared with the 3") here in SW OH. I'm glad I held out for the 3" - I think the proportions are about perfect for balancing IWB carry with accurate paper-punching. I couldn't be more happy with mine - it's my favorite pistol now.
All said, I don't think you got ripped at all - this is the type of quality firearm that doesn't loose much utility or value as long as basic maintenance has been performed.

I paid $560.00 for this one used - Private Sale -(already customized) about a year ago. I consider it a bargain since the Gemini Customs Package cost more than what I paid for the gun!
I sold my S&W 642-1 for $325.00 (for quick sale) on the same day & transferred on the same trip, so I got this gun for only $235.00 out of pocket.

I changed out the Custom grips for Hogue monogrip for everyday use. The Custom grips are only for BBQ's and I don't go to many these days.....LOL....

One of these days mine might make a trip to Gemini.....you know, right after I win the lottery lol

In Alabama, I sometimes see brand-new 3-inchers selling for $500, so I would not take a used one for nearly that amount. I'd expect a used specimen (in good shape) to be closer to $400. Of course, my market may be radically different from yours. How much would a new one have cost you? Can you even find the 3-inchers in your area?

New 3 inch SP101's are not to be found in our area. The only reference point I have is Cabelas(sold out, but last sold at $569) so I am feeling better on the price.

They've been a little high lately. Even used ones are commanding some high prices. I've been seeing almost $500 new. A bit over $400 for used.
Rugers have been in demand lately.

Bottom line, you did OK and the SP-101 will last forever. Your descendants could be fighting over this one!
