Could somebody clarify this for me. From what I understand I can legally carry a long gun in my vehicle in the state of Georgia as long as it is in plain sight. Is this right? Does it matter if it is loaded or not? Thanks.

This is correct. In plain view,loaded or unloaded.

§ 16-11-126. Possession and Carrying a Concealed Weapon; Penalty for Violating Licensing Requirement (a) Any person who is not prohibited by law from possessing a handgun or long gun may have or carry on his or her person a weapon or long gun on his or her property or inside his or her home, motor vehicle, or place of business without a valid weapons carry license. (b) Any person who is not prohibited by law from possessing a handgun or long gun may have or carry on his or her person a long gun without a valid weapons carry license, provided that if the long gun is loaded, it shall only be carried in an open and fully exposed manner.

My understanding is that, yes, you are correct.

However, obtaining a GWL is very easy and you don't have to worry about what may or may not be construed as "in plain site" once you are licensed to carry.

If it were me I would probably avoid having a loaded long gun in the car without a GWL.

I certainly agree,Warp. Having the license can avoid those possible LEO misunderstandings over the law.
