.
I have the opportunity to change duty guns from a SW MP15X to a Colt 6940.
Assuming it's an up and up trade what would you do and why?

Colt is a standard all others are compared to. You'll see various arguments against Colt vs another AR brand but these are always gripes about the extra cost over the competition or very old gripes on Colt LE/civilian politics. You probably won't find a legitimate gripe about reliability or functionality where Colt falls shy to another make. If you can get the uograde for nothing, do it... especially a duty rig.

I'm a big Colt fan even though I owned an Armalite at one time. You'll probably never have a problem with a Colt.

found one (or actually 2 if two rifles owned by the same guy counts as two legitimate gripes)

For a duty rifle it's an easy decision, get the Colt. I utterly hate the 6940 but given only those two options it would be the choice. If you can add a third option of a 6920 and add the rail and sights of your choosing that would be the way to go.

The 6940 is freefloated monolithic receiver and fore end. Should be more accurate.

I like my 6940. I wanted a quad rail from the start and the monolithic upper seems to be the way to go for that. It's lighter than an addon quad rail, its more rigid, and it gives you a full length rail across the top to mount just about any optic you could want. Mine has worked flawlessly so far using two 30 round PMAGS and the supplied Colt 20 round aluminum magazines. I haven't stopped to test it for accuracy, since frankly I'm not that great of a shot, but it's put every round where the sights were pointing so far.
