I've had a problem knowing the signifigance of a receiver code on my yugo re-worked 98k. The entirety (except two) of yugo captures I have seen carry the same markings on the left ring of the receiver. Could anyone tell me about this:

Thanks! BTW, forgot to mention that the attatched picture is of the code I DO NOT understand.

It is not a code; it is Serbian Cyrillic for "Factory 14", the factory in Kragujevac, Serbia where those rifles were reconditioned and where the Yugoslav Model 48's (and the Yugo automobiles) were made. At the time that work was done, Yugoslavia was a Communist state under Tito and numbering factories was common. That factory was also called the Red Flag factory (Zavodi Crvena Zastava); in recent years the Remington 798 was made there.

The Serb Cyrillic translates as "Radionitsa 145"/"Radionica 145", or "Workshop 145", one of the smaller outlying set-ups that fed the main Kragujevac factory; you can find reworked Mausers with several differing variations on this mark, showing different workshop IDs.

Thanks, SDC.

Kliverson, my apology for the incorrect info; sometimes old eyes see what they expect to see, not what is there.

The book Serbian and Yugoslav Mauser Rifles by Branko Bogdanovic has a ton of information on Yugoslavian Mausers, including the reworked 98k's. While it may not answer all your questions, it is a great place to start.

Thanks for the help all! I looked up the Radonica signifigance, and while there doesn't seem to be anything special about the armory itself, its just un-common enough to where some people would shell out a few extra bucks if my 98k were for sale (that will NEVER happen). I have seen ads for that book mentioned, but I've never seen it at a show. I should pick it up though, it'd help me understand my M48 better too.
