If you could only have 20 guns, lifetime, what would they be?

^Title. You only get 20. Lifetime. You must purchase them yourself. There is no forced timeline, you might buy them all tomorrow or you might not get the last one for another 40 years. But the 20 you list is all you get. I know it's counter intuitive, but we'll pretend, for the sake of discussion, that nothing new is released in the future (or you can add to the list every so many years) so you don't need to leave empty spaces for things that do not yet exist.

Feel free to think about this for a little bit before posting. It's a good, and fun, mental exercise.

If you could, please break the list down into categories: Handgun, Centerfire Rifle, Shotgun, Rimfire.

Don't be afraid to be very generic with descriptions where you may not have a particular model, or even manufacturer, picked out yet.

I started mine but it needs work to post. I'm really not sure what to put on it.

Edited to put my beta list of 20 into the first post:

Okay, now that I get down to it 20 isn't very many at all. This is actually pretty damn difficult.

Pistol (8)
Glock 26
Glock 26 (Olive Drab)
Glock 19
Glock 19 (Desert tan)
Glock 21SF
Upper mid-tier 1911 (Dan Wesson?)
HK USP .45 Compact, DAO, no safety
Reserved for a compact single stack 9mm(Kahr?)

Revolver (3)
Smith and Wesson 642
Ruger GP100, 4" .357
Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan .454 Casull

Rifle (5)
DS Arms FAL (CQB)
Springfield Armory M1A (scout sniper)
M1 Garand
Colt AR15 (CQB)
Lever action .357

Rimfire (2)
Ruger 10/22 (LTR)
Bolt-action .22lr (scoped)

Shotgun (2)
Remington 870, 12 gauge (HD)
Benelli, 12 gauge semi-auto

Yes, this list is probably pretty boring and redundant to a lot of you.

Reasoning:

Pistols
The concealed carry pistol is by far my most important category and I like Glocks for this. I have a 26, 19 and 21SF, am very happy with them and intend to keep them indefinitely. I'd like another 26 as it just seems so perfect, for ME, as a conceal carry gun. The Glock 19 is a do-it-all. Two is one, one is none, and magazine/ammo/holster/etc interchangeability is nice. The 1911 because everybody needs at least one, and it'll be a beauty, unlike the Glocks. Also...an AA .22lr conversion kit for at least one Glock.

Wheelguns
I want a pocket gun (642) but don't trust those tiny semi autos or .380 (BTDT, sold it), a full size .357 mag (GP100) is a fun must-have, I backpack out West (Ruger Alaskan)and I plan to go to Alaska plus my brother is moving out West and I will visit and do outdoors stuff.

Rifles
The M1 is totally badass and a legend. Just got mine...love it. The FAL and M1A are modern battle worthy semi autos in a full size cartridge, which I prefer. The AR is there because every gun guy needs at least one, right? A lever gun in .38/.357 sounds pretty fun and awesome, semi affordable to shoot, and like a great trunk gun.

Rimfire
Most everybody needs a 10/22. Great for plinking, inexpensive training (Appleseed LTR anyone?), and introducing new shooters. The bolt gun for inexpensively scratching the accuracy/"sniping" bug.

Only 20? sounds like a nightmare

Warp

lol. Perhaps so. But the idea is few enough that you need to prioritize, but plentiful enough that you can easily cover all genuine needs and have room for pure wants.

The nightmare would be at about 10.

Totally serious post, with a much different premise than the "5 guns" thread. The 5 guns thread asked what 5 guns we thought EVERYBODY should have. It did not ask what X guns YOU personally would choose.

Unless there is another "only x guns" thread I am unaware of...

My list is not all inclusive, but I could get by just fine with just the shooters I normally use.
Rimfires:
Pistol
1)S&W 651 in .22 WMR
2)Colt Cadet in .22lr
Rifle
3)Ruger 77/22 MK II in .22 WMR

Centerfire:

4)S&W mod 10 3"
5)FNP-9
6)Colt Python
7)Ruger H&R .32 Mag
Rifle
8)Marlin Camp 9
9)M4
10)Weatherby MK V in 30-06
11)Winchester 30-30

Shotgun:
12)Ruger SxS 20g

The remaining 7 that I cant live without are yet to be made. There is a strong possibility of a .17hmr in my future, but as long as the .22 Mag is working for me I may be ok without it. Same goes for the .45, maybe another Kimber Raptor in my future, but I dont have a pressing need.

I would be willing to bet that most people on this forum don't own 20 firearms and probably never will, at least at the same time. That being said, unless you have owned 100 or more, you really are not qualified to have an opinion on which 20 are the best. That rules me out.

Whoa there, nobody said anything about declaring what guns were the "best", or anything of the sort. Nobody even used the word best until you did. ;)

The premise was for you to select your 20.

So, what are yours? If you don't intend to ever own 20 guns at once, feel free to have a shorter and more concise list. :)

I did not take it as a ranking of guns at all. I see it as a list of the 20 guns I would own. If a poster does not have 20 guns yet (or even if never) doesn't matter. just a list of the 20 handguns you would own if you could.

I have to give mine a little more thought.

Glad to see you moved forward with the concept.

My 20:

Handgun:
-Glock 17L 9mm x2 For General use, the long barrel really helps with sighting.
-Glock 30SF .45acp x2 For CCW, packs a lot of punch in a smallish size
-Ruger LCR .38 w/ Crimson Trace x2 For CCW, best gun around for it IMHO.

I want duplicates of all these as they're my primary defensive pieces and should you ever need to use one it will be taken for evidence.

-Freedom Arms M83 .454 6" barrel & Trijicon RDS sight for handgun hunting. Also spare .45ACP cylinder.
-Freedom Arms M97 .22 lr, 7.5" w/ scope, for small game & general fun.
-Ruger LCR .22lr w/ CT grip for cheap practice & fun.

Rifles:
-Custom 10/22 w/ Eotech sight & lots of bx25 mags, hunting & fun.
-Custom 10/22 w/ scope, same as above
-AR15 carbine 5.56 of good quality, irons & Eotech + light, defensive use.
-AR15 5.56 rifle set up to SDMR specs, for precision use and varminting.
-AR15 5.56 rifle for CMP shooting, great practice.
-Light scoped carbine in.308 for all around use
-Top quality tactical target gun w/ good scope in .308 for targets etc..
-LMT MW .308 AR, scoped, a little more punch in my chosen defensive rifle.

Shotguns: (all 12ga)
-FN SLP 18.5" w/ ghost rings & chokes, x2, handy all around weapon & bigdog backup for the handguns for defensive use. Want a spare JIC.
-Browning Cynergy O/U for clays shooting

Should have a lot of fun with the above and be well equipped for most things.

I don't have reasoning - only wants. I don't approach shooting sports from a "needs" driven standpoint. Guns don't have dedicated roles to play for me, nor do I place function over form. Its as much about history and nostalgia as it is about shooting enjoyment.

Also, this list is subject to major revisions at any moment.

Arguably more shotguns than I need but it’s my favorite shooting discipline so I indulged a bit. I’d try to get a gun for every type of shooting I might want to do be it competition, hunting, plinking or training.

I know, it’s boring without specifics on makes and models but at this point I’d need to do a bunch of research before I could pinpoint what I’d want.

No AR-15. Just not a fan but certainly do not have a problem with those that enjoy them. In the super tiny remote chance I actually need a combat rifle for actual combat I suppose the Mini14 would work just fine. I do believe it prudent enough to have a few 30 round mags. You know, just in case.

Also, I would only require the 22's, the Savage 24, the Defender, the airweight 38, the 19, and the 30-30 to actually be for shooting. And the mini 14. I would prefer the rest to be safe queens. Especially the revolvers. I want them vintage, mint, and untouchable.

The first gun I ever bought is a Sig 1911 stainless carry model; it covers all my "needs", everything I've bought since has been a want. I don't hunt and I live in an apartment, so my no hunting rifles and my "home defense weapon" is a machete (I'd be really, really hesitant to fire any gun in this place. Unlike bad guys I have to worry about where the rounds end up).

So my list in chronological order of purchase looks like:

Sig 1911
Beretta 92FS
M1A
CMMG dedicated 22LR upper on a RRA lower
Walther P22
M1 Garand
Sig 556
CAI AK-74

At this point I realized I was really only shooting the 22LR pistol and rifle, about the only centerfire shooting I was doing was at work where I'm not paying for the ammo. I also realized there were some nice cheap and available C&R guns out there, and I'd always been a history buff. So my next purchases were:

a second 22LR upper so I could have one scoped and one with irons (doesn't really count as another gun)
M1895 Nagant revolver (which is incredibly fun to shoot, and 32S&W isn't too bad on price)
CZ82
Yugo SKS
Mosin 91/30

The Nagant, SKS, and Mosin got to me in absolutely excellent/like new condition. I just got the Mosin two weeks ago and am very, very happy with the stock on it, thing practically looks like it was made yesterday even though it's dated 1931.

So I own 12 and I've got a 22LR Marlin 25N bolt action that the mother-in-law left with me for safekeeping and said I could shoot all I want. Really the only guns I'd want now short of a M4A1 (which I couldn't afford anyway thanks to that d-bag Hughes) would be a 22LR revolver, a 22LR conversion for my Beretta (which isn't even really another gun), and I guess anything cheap and available that pops up on the milsurp market, say a TT-33 Tokarev for example.

I have yet to sell any guns and don't plan on it.

Something tells me that if you could pick any twenty guns you wanted, and then were given the option to swap them for something else, you would end up with a very different collection in just a few years. I have owned all sorts of guns that at the time I though I just had to have but after using them for a while decided that I wanted something else.

Perhaps.

My collection probably would not be very different in a few years. Some things might change, sure, but many of them wouldn't be going anywhere.

The first three guns I ever had are still with me and are on the list I posted. And if I had to cut the list down to 10, they would still be there. Actually, I think that if I cut the list to a mere 5...those 3 would be there. And not for sentimental reasons, but because they are exactly what I need/want, and that is very unlikely to change.

When I first saw this post, I thought it was pretty silly as the nth iteration of 'if you only had n...', but seeing the results and noting the distribution of guns by type (shotguns, rifles, etc.) is proving interesting. I'll take a shot, but realize that I'm left-handed so my choices are pretty constrained.

Handguns
1. H&K P7 M13 (9mm) (I'll take two of these)
2. H&K P7 M8 (9mm)
3. H&K P7M10 (40 S&W)
4. H&K USP Compact V2 LEM Lite trigger (left hand) (9mm)
5. Glock 26 (9mm)
6. Diamondback DB9 (9mm) pocket pistol
7. Desert Eagle (50AE)
8. H&K P7 K3 (.22LR and .32ACP - but counts as one)
9. Benelli M95E Atlanta .22LR Ambi

Rifles

10. Tikka S3 Sporter LH .308
11. FNH SCAR 17H .308
12. Kel-Tec RFB .308 Ambi Bull Pup
13. Stag Arms 3GL LH .223/5.56
14. FNH FS2000 .223/5.56 Ambi Bull Pup
15. Sako 85 Hunter LH 30-06
16. H&K MP5 SBR Carbine or H&K94 (if no SBR) (9mm)
17. Anschutz 1416D LH .22LR
18. Stag Arms/CMMG AR Carbine LH .22LR

Shotguns

19. Browning BPS All-Weather 12 Gauge (20" barrel) (tactical marine finish)
20. Browning BPS Engraved Receiver 12 Gauge (28" barrel)

First time I ever put together a list like this. Pricey but it's something to aspire to.

A bit different than the usual question so I will play.

Rifles
I love rifles. To me they tend to fall into hunting and self defense. I socially shoot with both. By having a limit of 20 weapons total, I'm likely going to skip super specialized weapons.

Self defense - I would start with just one kind of rifle, the M1a in 7.62 NATO.
Hunting - i like compact hunting rifles. I don't plan to shoot beyond 200 yards. I'd go with a 30-30 lever action Marlin and a Ruger 77 compact in 308. Both would have irons and scout style scopes.

Shotguns - I use these for clay shooting and self defense. I like 12 gauge. I could easily get by with a Mossberg 500 wood stock, forearm and screw in choke. Te second would be a Mossberg 590 with ghost rings.

Pistols - These are tools. For a back up hunting weapon I would have a Ruger revolved 44 magnum. For semi autos I could live with a Glock 30 and 21 in 45 ACP. Just for the heck of it, I will also get a 45 acp Sig 220 in stainless with nice wood handles.

22 rim fire
Gotta have some of these. I'd want an older Marlin 39 lever action, a Ruger 10-22 ( likely the takedown model) and a Ruger 22 pistol (the one that is more like the 1911 but I forget what it is called).

So, the total is 12 firearms. For now I will hold there. I could come up with ways of expanding but I would wait for quite a lint time before buying more.

Warp, the one thing I notice your list is missing is a proper hunting rifle. Sure the M1a or 357 lever could be used. However, would you really want to go the rest of your life without one? Also, do you really want to choose all 20 now? I don't think firearms really change all the much but your tastes over time may change. Just out of interest in the thread I challenge you to cut out 5 to leave room for other things at a later date. It's mean in good fun. Ya know, the kind of conversation we would have at a campfire. Your list is a good one.

That is missing, yes. I have never gone hunting so that got pushed down the list to begin with, and I figured that most possibilities could be covered with the 12 gauges, .22lr, .357 lever or one of the semi auto rifles. Other than legal/magazine capacity issues there is no reason the M1A (with scope) or M1 couldn't do the job.

I did, for awhile while making the list, have a scoped bolt in .308 or .30-06 listed. Probably just a simple Savage (affordable to me). It just missed the final cut.

That is the next step. Are you psychic, or did you read the same other thread I did before creating this? :)

I am going to have to end up with a ton of guns, because there are like a dozen Glocks that I want. And I am very handgun-centric. After all, I can carry them with me. How much good is a gun I have to leave behind almost all the time?

A-HA!! My old attrition game. I first started running my version of this game thread on my board about 15 years ago and, still re-run it from time to time. The best part is that every one who plays along tells me that ever time they play, they learn something new that they'd not before considered.

I was about to list my 20 last night when I realized that I'd left my M1A SOCOM16 off the list and went to bed pondering which gun to remove to replace with the M1A.

So, since it wudda gone in this tier any way, I'll ignore it and first give you my 20, then the reduction to 15:

My Twenty (from my existing battery):

Browning Citori 12ga Uplander
Mossberg 500 12 ga with 18" barrel and 26" hunting barrel
Rossi 12 Ga Coach Gun

Ruger M77 243 - tang safety model
Ruger M77 RSI 308 - tang safety model
Marlin 1895 Guide Gun 45-70

Marlin 1894 Cowboy Limited 44 Magnum
Rossi M92 44 Magnum Trapper
paired with
Ruger Bisley Vaquero 44 Magnum (4" barrel)
S&W 629 Trail Boss 44 Magnum (3" barrel)

Browning B92 357 Magnum
Ruger Blackhawk 357/9mm convertible

Kimber Custom Target 45ACP
Glock 30sf 45ACP
S&W 642 38 Special

Marlin 1897 Cowboy 22 rimfire
Browning 22 SA
Browning BLR 22 Rimfire
Ruger Bearcat
Ruger Single Six 22/22Magnum with 9 1/2" barrel

I'm pretty sure you ought to go back and read the relatively recent 5 gun thread again, and pay attention, because the one I remember did NOT ask people what guns they would choose if they could only have 5. That thread asked about which 5 guns EVERYBODY should have.

Big difference. It pays to read carefully.

Oh yes, BTW, I already addressed this point way back on the first part of the first page. Check post #10, among others.

Sometimes reading a thread before responding pays, too. ;)

There's a serious lesson than can be learned from "playing this thread".

But for darn sure, the guys who think they already know all there is to know, won't get it, and IMO couldn't "get it" if it was served to them on a silver platter.

If you don't like it - DON'T play. What does one say about themselves by trying to spoil it for everyone else and making comments that uncannily resemble the noises coming from the south end of a northbound mule?

If my comment here is offensive, Moderator, please feel free to delete it, OTOH, some of the posters here-in need to grow up and "get over themselves" IMO. Being completely intolerant of the other guys point of view is at best unseemly. No doubt, the bit dog will scream the loudest.

This may come as a surprise to most of you, but I've only ever shot a .22 once and long after I had already learned how to use my uncle's guns (a few milsurps, hunting rifles, a 1911, and a Single Action Army). It didn't impress me, I didn't have any fun with it, and I've never looked back.

Cost be damned! What good is saving money on ammo at the cost of my personal enjoyment?

As for the question at hand... If we're talking about my potential future children then I might buy them something, but that would be their gun, not mine. Hence, it has no place on MY list. As for an adult, probably the the Dan Wesson or GP100 loaded with .38 Specials and/or the AR-15.

I know I already posted in this thread, but I've had a change in philosophy since I did. My collection will only include 3-4 models of gun, ironically all S&W:

S&W M&P 9
S&W M&P 9C
S&W M&P 15
Maybe a shield.

Some of the M&Ps would be configured for carry, the others for HD (i.e. pretty much keep a light on 100% of the time, RDS) and they all would have the APEX lever-style (instead of stock hinged style) trigger installed, and the M&P 15 would have ambi controls and a rail, allowing me to put on a RDS, flashlight, and AFG.

Still the same purpose though - SD and range toys. Oh, I'd have multiple models of each, but just those models.

Yep, pretty much it. Didn't mean to whiz in anyone's Cheerios. But tolerance goes both ways OJC. If you ask for an opinion on a internet forum you need accept the fact that all opinions are not going to be the same as yours. One should not complain about negative posts and then create one themselves. You tell me which of these two posts has more negativity and more closely fits the definition of trolling......

This thread makes me feel so out of touch with the thoughts of today. All of these AR, AK, Socom, FAL guns bore me to freaking death. I would waist one of the 20 guns on a combat rifle. And that would be an AK that I have owned for more than a decade. But it is kind of boring too, but for some reason I feel like I need it. The rest of the 19 would be waisted on revolvers and lever action rifles.

It isn't in my hands yet, but my very first AR-15 has been paid for and carried out of the store in somebody's hands. (birthday around the corner) :) It isn't a Colt, but I didn't pay for it and there's nothing wrong with Palmetto State Armory.

I have found as I get older I could get by with less and less. I posted my list before. I don't know if it's a case of been there and done that or if I've just figured out what I really like or that many firearms just are so similar that I don't need near duplicates. Wonder how others who've shot for a long time feel.

Pretty much in agreement Sheepdog. I've shot well over 100 different models, the more guns I've shot, the fewer I feel a need to own.

If I was putting together a 'nice to own' list I guess I would break it down something like the following.

Handguns

Rimfire:
S&W Model 41 pistol
Ruger Single Six convertible.

Centerfire:
S&W Model 27 five inch barrel.
Glock 17
Glock 34 with Trijicon RMR
CZ SP01 Shadow
Colt SAA in .357 Magnum

Rifles:

CZ452 in .22lr
Remington 7615P in .223
Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55

Shotgun:
IAC Model 87

Only 13, but it would completely meet my requirements for hunting and target shooting, while meeting the restrictions in Australia on semi automatic long arms.

Out of curiosity, why the duplicates on the pistols? I was tempted to do the same but the rules of the game listed 20 as lifetime max. Also, why both a bolt and semiauto 22 LR? I can understand the need for a 22 but two of them seems like duplication when the lifetime cap is kinda low. Also, I still dont see a proper hunting rifle. Again, this is,all meant in friendly conversation. I could be quite happy with you list. Well, I might sob if I didn't own a lever action.

The pistol duplicates are because I view my carry guns as my most important firearms, bar none. If I could only have one gun it would be a Glock 26. "Two is one, one is one". I want a backup that can use the same ammo, magazines, holsters, etc as my go-to.

Bolt and semi .22lr because I want the bolt for tack driving precision fun (on the cheap!), and the 10/22 for volume practice/training that has more carry over to other rifles. Mine has tech sites and a GI sling. Perfect for an Appleseed, for example.

I have never gone hunting so hunting rifles don't usually make my lists. Plus, other than legal restrictions, there shouldn't be any reason the semi auto .308 isn't a nice hunting rifle.

If it wasn't for ammo being so expensive I considered a bolt action .308 in place of the bolt .22lr.

The theory behind this mental exercise, beyond simple entertainment of ones self, is to iron out a list and then sit back and compare it to your current collection as well as your intended future purchases. If some of your guns and/or your intended future purchases are not on the list...why not? Is there a good reason you are spending money on guns that supposedly aren't that important for you to have?

It isn't a question to answer to anybody else, just something to sit back and think about.

Nice to see this thread still going. I first participated in a similar one when OJC ran it on another site and found it extremely useful in making reasoned choices on what to aquire instead of going off whims of fancy. Greatly reduced turnover in my collection and increased my proficiency and enjoyment.

As Warp posted about a reduction of 5 to 15, these are my choices:

HANDGUNS:

- Glock G34 (1) & G17L (2), My favorite guns, very accurate, reliable and do the vast majority of what I want/need to do with a handgun. Duplicated plus a second spare as I consider it the core of my needful weapons.

- Ruger KLCR, .357 snubby w/ CT laser grips (2) The best CCW gun going IMHO. Duplicated as it's a second essential of my collection.

- Ruger LCR .22lr, handy little pocket gun and valuable trainer for the .357 LCR's.

- Ruger SRH Alaskan, .454. This snubby powerhouse is an absolute blast to fire with .45 LC and .454 and serves as a "Someday" gun for me, as in someday I'll use it for bear protection when I finally go to Alaska.

- Freedom Arms model 83 with 6" barrel, round butted grip and a mount for a Trijicon RMR. A relatively compact, hard hitting and accurate piece of functional art for handgun hunting etc.... I actually have a 7.5" in .475 Linbaugh but would like to have a common chambering with the Alaskan and .480 Alaskans are unfortuately like hens teeth.

Total Handguns: (8)

SHOTGUNS:

- FN SLP, 12 ga, w/ ghost rings & screw in chokes. A tremendously capable & handy weapon. The heavy hitter in my collection with either slugs or buck.

- Browning Cynergy 12 ga, synthetic stock w/ 30" barrels. Camo from head to toe, gives my redneck heart a thrill and feels just right when swinging on a target. Wanted this one for years and finally got it.

Total Shotguns: (2)

RIFLES:

- Custom Ruger 10/22 topped with an Eotech and a strong supply of BX25 mags. An absolute blast to shoot, quick & accurate.

- Custom Ruger 10/22 topped with a 6x Super Sniper mil/mil scope. Same as above.

- Rock River 20" national match flattop AR-15 somewhat customized to SDMR specs with a Trijicon 3-9x scope in a good QD mount.

- 16" AR set up w/ iron sights & an Eotech for defensive use if needed.

- A reach out bolt gun of some sort, most likely in .308. No urgent need, but I'd sure like one.

Total Rifles: (5)

Calibers/Gauges: .22lr, 9mm, .38/.357, .45LC/.454, .223/5.56 & 12gauge plus some as yet decided a long range cartridge.

Revolver:
SW M15 4"
SW M10 4" HB

Rifle:
Lever action, chambered in: 30-30; 357; and for long range 45-70.
Preferably Winchester design, or Marlin production model.

Don't need 20, when the rifle/revolver combo are the same chambering.
Do not desire 357 revolver, too much for an hold hand more interested in hitting the mark, than 'supersizing' the chamber.
Pistols, since not in combo chambering, are an 'ooo, ahhh' factor.
All 'combo' ammunition not 'plus p', to facilitate longer life of firearms, and quicker time back to target. Wadcutters or semiwadcutters will be desired choice of bullets, since they work better than HP's 50-50 operational flaws.
Lastly, since DHS and NWS have a hankering for .40 S&W pistol ammo, the old, haggard .38 Special might not be too high up on their 'ammunition watch list', since it has been demoted from a 'service round', unlike most pistol ammunition, of today.

This week I tried a Ruger compact in 308. I lived the size but didn't like the slop in the bolt. I know it doesn't impact performance. As such I'd need to find a different bolt action. I like the look of the Kimber rifles so I'd probably go that direction. I'd have to try the bolt just,to make sure it didn't feel the same. I didn't notice the same with the Rem 700.

Rifles - 3
Ruger Mini 14 223

Somewhat surprised to not see that many Glock 19s and especially 23s. Would have thought the 40sw would be slightly more popular than it is on this thread.

Actually exactly what I have now and it is less than 20 guns. I have a PT 92 9mm with a 22LR conversion also, PT 111 Pro my wife carries and my RIA 1911 CS (compact) which I carry, a Rossi 92 in 45 Colt, Rossi Rio Grande in 45-70, a 12 ga shotgun side x side and a 20 ga in also in a side by side. I also have 3 45 colts SAA in 4.75, 5.5 and 7.5 barrels. I pretty much have all my needs covered at this point. I might add the most I've ever owned at one time in my life which is 66 years and shooting since I started at age 8 with my grandfather.

I played before and I feel like playing again as I've spent some time thinking about it.

Rifles - I enjoy shooting these more than anything. Range and hunting are biggest uses but i would want one just in case semi auto.

30-06 bolt action - if I am going to have a small collection I'd want it to be very nice. I'd probably go with a Kimber with blued metal and upgraded walnut and just a simple 4x Leupold scope.

A lever action - my favorites are the Marlins. Normally I'd say a 30-30. However if I'm going to have a small set of rifles I'd probably settle on a 45-70 just so I have a big caliber hunting rifle. The 30-30 would be too similar to the 30-06. I'd go with a pre-crossbolt safety and I'd want every thing in stainless (if needed have someone CNC a receiver) that I would have Robar essentially do a "blurring" to. Straight grip stock and it might just be a laminate. Barrel either 16.5 or 18" in length and skinner sights.

Mini-14 ranch style blued and wooden stock. I like the garand style bolt and I like the rounds it can hold just in case there is ever a problem. Normall I prefer 308 but I have a bolt action 30-06 above so no need to duplicate.

Ruger 10-22 takedown. I'd want one of these for plinking in order to more affordably practice and just to have fun. Likely put skinner sights on it.

Shotguns - as much as I like them, I really can get by with just one that would double duty for home and field use.

Mossberg 500 in 12 gauge with wood furniture. I like the tang safety and the fact that the shell elevator stays tucked up out of the way.

Pistols - I don't dislike them but they are more of a tool for me. I love Sigs but for today I'm just going to keep it completely practical.

Glock 21 and 30 in 45 ACP. I like the cartridge and I like the capacity and weight of these. I'd get the 22 LR adaptor kits as well

Glock 26 OR 27 as I do like the size power and capacity balance they provide.

So, all in all that gets me to eight firearms. I would be just fine with this and would meet all my needs. As I'm now older, I've shot a lot of different things and don't feel like I need to own every thing that I like. Renting a range gun or shooting a few rounds of a buddy's rifle or shotgun does me just fine.

Nightmare is right.

There are 11 different makers of the M1 Carbine alone.

It's funny you would suggest this tread. I',m older now and have owned more than 100 different guns in my life. Each purchase I have made for myself, usually has been accompanied by 2-3mos. of research and comparison of differing manufacturers offerings and talking to people who already own what I'm looking at. Then I decide if it is worth getting for ME. Now I have given most of what was my "collection" to my children (although my oldest daughter is holding out for my Kimber CDP II .45), I have focused on the following:
.22 semi & bolt action rifle & .22 semi & revolver why? Ammo easy to get and stock away and I don't care what anyone says they can be quite deadly (years in LE taught me that lesson many time over).
9mm pistol & semi rifle why? most common NATO round if it ever gets truly ugly you'd probably be able to find this stuff (ammo) laying around.
.45 pistol why? proven performer & ammo is fairly common. It makes bad people say ow, if they still can and others think twice.
.223/5.56 why? no comment required although, AK47 does get honorable mention in this category
12 & 20ga's why? Common Ammo and some women don't like 12's and despite what some will argue, these are about the only thing that can truly slow a charging body, notice I did not say kill or stop (instantaneous requires an RPG). In real life that's important and forget what they show you in the movies.
My keep list is reduced to 20 various forms of these weapons, and at this point in my life I find them to be most satisfying. Good luck and enjoyment to all of you on your individual journeys of ownership, I have found this process to highly personal (don't feel like you ever have to justify yourself if you did your research and you bought well meeting your need).

I could likely do everything I'd ever want to do with these:

Guns in 22 Long Rifle

1) Ruger 10/22
2) Ruger 22/45 or MKIII
3) S&W 617 or K18

Handguns for Defense

4) Glock 26 (with 22 conversion kit)
5) Glock 26 (with 22 conversion kit)
6) SIG P220 (with 22 conversion kit)
7) S&W Model 29-3 with 4" barrel
8) S&W Model 642

Rifles
9) AR-15 (multiple uppers and 22 conversion kit)
10) Remington 700 in 308 Winchester

Shotgun
11) A nice shotgun. Since I'd only have line, I'd look at Perazzi or a high end Beretta.

The rest would be duplicates and slots for the "gee-whizgottahaveit" guns.

If I really had to pare it down for some reason:

1) Ruger 10/22
2) Ruger 22/45
3) S&W J-Frame (any model without a lock or lemon-squeezer safety)
4) S&W Model 29-3
5) SIG P220
6) AR-15 with multiple uppers

And if I REALLY had to cut the list:

1) Ruger 10/22
2) S&W Model 29-3
3) AR-15

Why the revolver in 44 Magnum over my favorite guns in 9x19mm and 45 ACP? I can reload the 44 Magnum down to 45 ACP performance levels or crank it up to be some uberwhompin' loads. The 10/22 is always on the list because it's the most fun gun I own.

I feel old; I'm (hopefully at least) half way and have more than I'd likely ever 'need'.

And more than twenty for sure.

That said, I'd like a Barrett light 50 for kicks. And really, a straight old plain vanilla AR-15/M-16--old school @ about 7 lbs, triangular handguards, no forward assist, and (of course) a three position sellector.

I've rambled on and on anout the stuff I've got on here ad nauseum already.

Despite coming from the United Kingdom, the land that boast of having probably the strictest Gun Laws in the World.

A land that confiscated all legally held self loading centrefire Rifles and all handguns except Black Powder ones.

You can still own quite a number of Guns. (Getting to know and understand our Gun Laws helps.)

I could get by with 20 pretty easily.

In no particular order:

1 - Winchester 73
2 - Colt Single Action Army (or clone)
3 - Ruger Security Six (blued, 4 inch)
4 - M1 Garand
5 - 1911
6 - Ruger Security Six
7 - 12 ga side by side shotgun (hunting)
8 - Smith and Wesson Model 10 (4 inch pencil barrel)
9 - Smith and Wesson Model 36
10 - Winchester 94
11 - Winchester 92 (357 magnum or 44)
12 - Ruger 10/22
13 - Flintlock Kentucky Rifle
14 - 1860 Army Colt
15 - Bolt action hunting rifle (30-06 or 308)
16 - Hawken Rifle
17 - Glock 19
18 - Model 99 Savage
19 - Smith and Wesson Model 19
20 - 12 ga Riot Gun

I might tweak this list around but I think my life would be "bearable" with the above list of firearms.
