Increasing a barrel's external diameter?

Strange question, and I couldn't find anything via searching.

I am trying to run a 5.45 saiga in a saiga 12 stock. Kushnapup fun. The stock uses the barrel for stability, so unless I can figure out how to reliably increase the barrel diameter, or find a way to shim it, my project isn't going to work too well.

Any ideas for some sort of sleeve or something that would possibly work? I was thinking about a wrap of some thermal tape, but I don't think that is going to work in the long run.

Thanks

I have no idea what diameters you are talking about.

But if the sleeve is thicker then a few thousandths of an ince, a lathe turned steel sleeve put on with silver solder would be the most perminent way, I would guess.

Tape of any kind wouldn't be the way to do it for sure.

Sounds like a job for JB Weld Man!

JB Weld would be fine until the 5.45 barrel heat melts it and sets it on fire!!!

Is there any way you could machine a ring to fit over the very base of the barrel near or on the chamber? (silver soldered on of course) That way you could have a free floated barrel. Or does the stock need support further down the barrel?

Pictures would help.

Would plain glass bedding work?

I have to confess that this is the first time I have had anyone ask about making a barrel bigger, usually folks want to lighten the barrel.

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't modify the rifle to fit the stock, I'd modify the stock to fit the rifle - seems to present the potential for less expensive mistakes in my opinion. ymmv

And we have a winner in Rail Driver.

One of the very first rules of gunsmithing is that you alter the part that's easiest or cheapest to replace if things don't work out.

The proper course here is to figure out a way of modifying the stock to fit the barrel.
Botch up the barrel and it's not going to be cheap or easy to replace.

While I agree that altering the stock is the best option a piece of heatshrink from an electrical supply house will do the job and take a fair ammount of heat. If you dont like it remove it as you have done nothing permanent to the barrel.
Not saying that sticky stuff will come off easily but it can be removed with the proper solvents.
Now save yourself some greif and build up that stock. I just wanted to be sure all options were on the table.

I typed up a reply, then I noticed the "Kushnapup" part b/c I could figure out how youd bed an ak in the first place. This is what hes talking about modifying. Its a funky bullpup saiga stock.

It costs almost as much as a Saiga.

But if you think you can get the barrel to lie right in that regular glass bedding compound should be fine. Or the devcon metal epoxy commonly used for bedding. Its just a 5.45 Saiga, not a full auto m16 with a 100 round drum or anything.

make a split sleeve you can screw together like a scope ring
