Dear THR,
I have recently recieved a special permission from my government to import a full auto 9mm SMG. I want to know which is the best modern smg the money can buy in hour opinion excluding mp5s, uzi, mac and etc.
Thanks

Just out of curiosity, which government do you reside under?
Best SMG for what? You exclude the MP-5, which has long been the standard for a 9mm subgun. They come in many configurations for just about any role, and is about as advanced an SMG you're gonna find. The MP-5 is probably the most used by agencies.
In all honesty, SMGs aren't as popular as they once were with military and LEO agencies, who have mostly gone to carbine setups, so development of new SMGs isn't really happening that much. There is that KRISS setup, but I think it's .45 only.

I like the UMP's look (though maybe that's knocked out due to no MP5?), there's the Daewoo K7 which is a nice looking weapon, The Kriss Vector is supposed to come out in 9mm eventually, there's the floro mk-9 which is kinda funky looking, there's the STKinetics CPW which is pretty awesome looking, the CZW 9 PS which is a nice looking firearm, and the steyr tmp that i can think of. Here's a list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_submachine_guns) from wikipedia you can sort by year or caliber.

I can only say Non-US to avoid lengthy debates. Trust me on this one. I have seen it happening, unfortunately.
I excluded MP5 because I have it.
I am considering UMP 9mm and BT MP9. With the privilage of my position in the cabinet I am entitled to import one auto so that is the main reason. Will mostly use it in vehicle when travelling distances. I know their short comings.

Once I get the said item, then definately. I have bunch of FA weapons from uzi to g3 etc , over 100. It is my hobby to collect very difficult to come by items and for that I have to go through many many government permissions and spend lots of money. But its worth it at the end.

I used mp40. It may still be around in fact since I never sold it. Just deposited with local station. However, its not modern by any means.

The Russian PP-90 is interesting, it has a 64 round helical magazine.

Stick with HK go for a UMP 9mm, Extremely durable light weight (it's mostly polymer) and as reliable as the MP5 series. Also for vehicular work, the stock is a side folder and can be fired with the stock folded. As for accessories Hogue makes and adapter to replace the factory stock with an AR tube & stock.

Now I am split between HK UMP 9mm and BT MP9

The HK seems more easily moddable but the MP9 has that compact "carry at all times" look.

The Ak look is ever so common, but great capacity.

I recently shot the B&T MP 9 in full auto-silenced version and loved it.
It is very compact, comfortable and light, yet has very manageable recoil.
(had a blast, because we also had the H&K 41, M4 and Sig 552 in select fire present that day.)

Was checking to see if Steyr still made the AUG in 9mm, and found out that they have an A3 version out:

Rumor has it that Kriss is making a 9mm. That would be fun, and unusual!

Steyr would be great if interchangeable. However my permit says 9mm

Godfather,
If you exclude the MP5, UZI and MP40, then my next choice would be a WALTHER MPL. I rate it equal to the MP40 for handling, accuracy and reliability, but it is more compact.
If the UZI itself is out, what about a Mini-UZI. I have not fired one, but they seemed to be as highly regarded as the original UZI with less bulk and weight.
I also like the INGRAM M-10 in 9m.m., but only with the supressor attached.

Have u seen the new Scorpion? Not the old 32acp one, the new 9mm. I think it has "EVO" in the name. I know nothing about them, but can honestly say if I was allowed to import any SMG, it would be at the top of the list. Give one a look,U'll c y it has me so excited. Only downside is the ROF, a little too quick for my taste.

Whats wrong with the 9mm M16/M4 platform?
I think that is a easy controllable platform with literally thousands of options, otherwise the HK, simply because of the availability of parts

I too like the Sterling. It is select fire, single/full auto, and with the side mag can be used prone. The mags are super and just don't bugger up. With the stock folded it is easy to handle in a vehicle, and can be used in an emergency in the folded configeration. The rate of fire makes it easy to put your shots on target, and get short burst fire.

I've shot an MP41, Beretta 38A, Uzi, Sten Mk V, Owen, Sterling, Madsen M50, MP5, M3 Grease gun, Owen, and Mauser Schnellfeuer. If I had to pick one of them for "real" use, I think it would be the Sterling. They are nice and simple, very well built (not cheap, like most tube SMGs), ergonomic, and compact. And they have one of the best magazines ever made for a submachine gun.

Not NFA, but I was looking at IF I got a 9mm carbine, maybe the Thureon 9mm. It seems to be based on the AR, but actually designed for 9mm (instead of having those weird looking magazines for the AR conversion) and uses either Uzi or Glock mags, depending on which model you get.

What about a FN P90? 50 rounds, and if you can get the proper ball ammo round for it plenty effective and compact.

I'd get a stocked glock 18. Then if I feel like concealing it I would just remove the stock. But I'm sure you already have one. It would be one of my first picks if I were in your position.

I can't believe that no one has mentioned the Swedish K (aka Calr Gustav M/45) as a desirable choice on here. It's one of the best made and controllable of all the 9mms.

I think you would be hard pressed to find anything better or more modern than the Steyr TMP/BT M9 in 9mm ... that is if you don't include the HK MP5

I think if Americans put together a serious lobby, the machinegun ban must be repealed.
So far I am fixed on BT9.

There is also the B&T APC to consider. It looks to be a little more modular than the MP9 and has a higher rate of fire

Sterling for me.
UK military prefer it over anything else but were forced to adopt the MP5, more for political reasons. Special services use it as well.
The reasons being that, compared to other SMG's, it's extremely reliable, light, small, low recoil, and accurate.
It looks 'old school' to many but I'd go for functionality over looks any day.

If you have ever been shot at, you most likely will agree, the lower you are to the ground the safer you are. You can't get much lower to the ground than the Sterling. I agree........

If you already have an HK, I would think about a G18 and a FAB Defense KPOS. The link is here:

I just got to fiddle with one of these the other day, and there's no way I would rate it best modern SMG. First, it has no provision for a shoulder stock, and it's thus impossible to shoot accurately at any range. Second, the rear sling swivel is also the catch that holds the gun together. Bump your sling the wrong way, and the guns top cover pops up and the bolt falls out. No thanks!
Other than that, it's a nicely built piece. Very simple to manufacture, and the recoil reduction tricks seem like they would work well enough (if you had a stock to exploit the reduced recoil).
