So I ordered a 74 style muzzle comp for my wife's WASR. After removing the "thread protector" I found out to my horror that there were no threads at all. The seemingly superfluous muzzle cap was only pressed on. After googling it I found that the threads were removed during the AWB for compliance reasons, yet it's still possible to thread the barrels with a die kit.

Here's my problem; the compsator's threads slide over the muzzle. Since the compensator is already slightly than the muzzle, obviously threading won't work. I'm assuming that on some of the ban WASR's the existing threads were simply ground off. So what are my options here? Should I just weld it in place?

The Tapco AK-74 style comp is junk if thats what you got. The AK-74 comp fits over the threaded front sight base and is 24mm if memory serves, so you would need the adapter to go down to the AK-47 WASR size of 14mm. I would then just pin it or use set screws in the adapter unless you feel ok with a few tack welds.

The comp is 14mm. The problem is that the rifle has no threads at all. So because the 14mm comp slides over the muzzle of the rifle, I'm not sure how I could put a comp on it, other than welding it.

Best bet, in that case, is to replace your front sight block with a threaded one. They can be had from a number of sources, including K-Var.com.

Yeah, if you get a 24mm threaded front sight block you can use the real and more effective 74 brake.

A some what simpler method is to buy a adapter that converts the standard 14x1 left hand thread AK thread to the 24mm right hand threads of a genuine AK-74 brake.

Since your rifle has no threads and they were probably ground off, undersizing the barrel, you'd weld the adapter on the front sight base, then just screw the muzzle brake on.

Buy the adapter from K-Var among others, and buy a genuine AK-74 muzzle brake or an American made EXACT replica, NOT the 14x1 left hand Tapco version.

When welding the adapter on the front sight base, install the brake and put a cleaning rod down the bore to allow making sure the brake will be aligned properly with the bore.
Just tack the adapter on, then remove the rod and brake and finish welding the adapter.
All that's needed is a bead just large enough to make sure the adapter won't come loose.

If that doesn't work for you, you can still thread the existing barrel with the threads as used on the AR-15, since the AR barrel threads are smaller in diameter then the AK threads.
Once threaded you can pick some sort of brake that will fit the AR type threads.
Among others Bushmaster used to sell a Tapco type AK-74 brake threaded to fit an AR rifle.
Like all the Tapco type brakes, it's not as effective as an original type AK-74 brake.

Again, he can't use 14x1 threads. His muzzle is smaller than the internal diameter of the 14x1 muzzle brake already. There's not enough meat on his barrel tip to thread it. Not to be rude, but don't people read?
