Dan Wesson 1911 rear sight keeps coming loose

2nd time now. It's dovetailed in, with a vertical set screw through the middle I tried blue-loctite on the screw and cranked it down good. It's a very small allen screw so I don't want to bugger it up of course. Would blue loctite work in the dovetail? I don't suppose I should try red....
LMK what you think.
I guess I could try removing the sight and dinging the edges of the dovetail with a punch or something...
This gun has been a bit more trouble than I expected, based on the stellar reputation.
I'm starting to have premature slide-lock again also.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Yep!
Should have put the blue Lock-Tight on the dovetail instead of the screw.
It's not the screw that is slipping.
It's the dovetail.
If you want to tighten it up?
Peen the edges of the dovetail on the slide slightly.
Or center punch the bottom of the sight dovetail several places to throw up some burs first.
Then lock-tight it and let it set to cure 24 hours before messing with it again.

Dang... that rear sight is HARD! LOL
I flattened my Dasco Pro center punch on it... barely made a mark. Luckily the prick punch in the set worked fine. Wonder if the center punch didn't get properly hardened.
Anyway, I got it reasonably snug with a few punches to the bottom of the sight, blue loc-tite, and set screw. We'll see if it holds this time.
There was barely a smudge of some red material under the sight; I'm guessing some type of adhesive from the factory. Probably built it on a friday. If the trigger weren't so dang good I'd return it (again) and make them send me a new one. If it continues premature slide lock it's useless to me for my purposes (single stack competition). I guess it could be a very expensive plinker or host for my Conversion unit.

Premature slide lock is often due to bullet noses bumping the slide stop lug as the next round comes up into feed position.
Look for copper tracks on the lug.
Take the slide off, reinsert the slide stop, insert a loaded magazine. Look to see how close the slide stop lug comes to the top bullet nose. Imagine things bouncing around in recoil.
I have had more than one slide stop cut back to clear and done a couple myself after I saw where to attack.
Another way to secure the rear sight is to drill a little pocket in the bottom of the slide dovetail for the sight set screw to drop into. It doesn't take much, but be sure your windage is spot on before you mechanically lock it in place.

Thanks Jim. I thought about milling/drilling a detent divot in the slide for the set screw as you noted, but since I don't have a mill or a drill press, I opted for the shadetree method. :D
I'll have a look at the slide lock. DW replaced it when I sent the gun back for warranty work, but that doesn't mean it's right.

I had a close look at the clearance between 230 gr ball and the stop... it is pretty tight in there. Anyone have details on how much clearance there needs to be? What, if any, are the problems associated with removing too much material from that side of the slide stop? Does it do anything?

I don't have a measurement.
I just know it when I see it.
If bullets are hitting it, there should be visible brass tracks on it where they are hitting.
The first thing I would do is file off any rough machining or casting? marks on the end and polish the snot out of it.
Sometimes that is all it takes.
Actually shortening it, and how much, is determined by putting an empty mag in the frame and seeing how much projection you have to deal with where it contacts the tab on the mag follower.
Also, those mag tabs can be bent slightly further over toward the stop to get more contact as long as they still slide up & down in the mag freely.

Well I measured a few dimensions next to my Colt one, which also had some copper marks on it BTW, and it was MAYBE 5-10 thousandths wider. They both have the same 4 angles on the tab face so I assume it's like that for a reason. I stoned it down a bit, trying to keep the same angles but I probably messed it up. I'll try it out tomorrow and see if it helps.
Thanks for the advice

Tried it out... seems to be working fine with all mags. Keep your fingers crossed for me! :D

Great!
See how easy that was!!
I betcha it's good to go now.
Unless you change to a LSWC or blunt JHP bullet design.
Then it's start all over again!

I was actually considering running SWCs because there's more clearance twixt them and the stop. but they have their own issues. I've gone through 100 loads of old (1960s era) LSWCs with really stubby noses... they go bang but they don't always feed. LOL

Only trouble now is the rear sight is regulated a bit right of center. Seems to hit okay going fast on steel though, maybe I'm jerking it left into alignment :D

Then they slide forward in the mag from recoil and hit the slide stop coming up.
