SFC Ed May 22, 2012, 10:58 PM Good evening, I need some help with 91/30 ammo. The rifle is a 1943 version puchased from a large retailer for $99. My brother came up with 4 boxes of what may be 200 grain soft point from a co-worker who no longer has a
91/30. Researching the net has shown the 148gr to be the military issue for the "Big War" and my question is, will this 69 year old rifle handle the 200gr ammo.
The boxes have Made in Russia, Bullet Mass 13 g 20 pcs on the side panel.
The projectile is soft point and probably Berdan primed.
Has anyone had experience with this heavy round?
Ed

LJ-MosinFreak-Buck May 22, 2012, 11:02 PM It'll work fine. Go shoot! :)
TurtlePhish May 22, 2012, 11:23 PM Yeah, don't sweat it. Mosins are near indestructible. I've personally never even heard of one blowing up or breaking.
Vaarok May 23, 2012, 12:03 AM The Mosin was meant to fire both the 150gr M1908 LPS light ball and the 180gr M1930 DPS heavy ball, and the 200gr SP is loaded to comparable pressure as the M1930 loading. Go forth and shoot. It's not going to explode any more than an Enfield meant for 150gr FMJ will shatter from 180 or 200gr SP.
firesky101 May 23, 2012, 02:31 AM Mosin's may be ugly, clunky, inaccurate, and despised (I said "may", I do not support these views), but I don't think you will find anyone calling them weak.

Agreed, I do call them ugly, clunky, rifled scatterguns, but they are built like a tank, I HIGHLY doubt you would ever have any pressure issues unless you work up a compressed load of blue dot :D Remember heavier bullets do not equal more pressure, they usually just use a slower burning powder to compensate.
Clark May 23, 2012, 11:24 AM I have worked up loads in WWII Mosin Nagants, until the bolt jammed.
Knowing what I now know that is low risk, but 10 years ago that was a sweaty hand project.
SFC Ed May 23, 2012, 01:31 PM Thank you all for setting an old mans mind at ease, the answers are very reassuring. I'll take old Ivan out at the first opportinity.
To answer michaelbsc's question, I bought the rifle at Scheels, not my first purchase from them.

The Mosin can handle it just fine, don't sweat it.
YOU on the other hand ... I have three words for you:
slip-on recoil pad
You'll thank me later :-)
