I traded in my Taurus 415Ti that was just collecting dust to get a Smith 640 to be my pocket companion. :D

I love revolvers. :D

I've carried one for several years. Put the Ashley BigDot on it, which, IMO, adds greatly to its "close in" defensive capabilities. It does cut down a bit on the usable range. On another board, there was a bantering discussion of the relative merits of the 640 and the 649, which of course has SA capability. Solved any problems (real or imaginary) by getting the 649....and carrying them as a set :)

I too want a big cool site on my 640. :D
I had a 649, but the "fins" seemed to channel all the lint in my pocket into the hammer area, so I got rid of it.
I know it is a big debate, but I don't feel the need for an aimed shot on my belly gun.

Man, I love revolvers. :D

I should elaborate, the 640 is new to me, but it is used and doesn't have that annoying lock built into it.
That's why I went used, so as to not have to deal with that stupid lock system.

Email sent Walosi. :D

My 649 is a new one - lock, MIM stuff and all. I've had it apart, and everything looked solid and well done, so I put it all back like it was. I've put a couple hundred throught it so far (110 gr. .357 and my "mid range" .357 handloads) and everything is still good. The 640 is one of the last before they went to MIM and the lock - new star and thumbpiece, and new cylinder stop milled into the frame. It is nearing 2000 rds. and is LNIB. Solid little puppies :D

I'm new to this forum, and I only have one J frame, but it's a 640 :)... Really handy little thing, and more accurate than I ever thought possible.

Some lucky folks have a "few" more 640's......

Congratulations on your 640. I got one October 2002 and was able to find a new one pre lock. Great gun!

The 640 is great, I have had one for many years now. I usually carry it during warm weather when an IWB holster is best for concealment.

I own the Model 60, the 640 and 649 Pre-lock and carry one of them in a fanny pack for personal protection. Why are people opposed to the lock. From it's design I don't see any risk of malfunction if you don't lock the gun.

Ditto - the lock is a non-issue. The MIM seems to be a concern to some, but it is still a "wait and see" thing. So far, on two new ones I have with the MIM parts, it may well be a long time waiting. The M66 is slick, smooth, and the equal in action to any I've owned. The 649 isn't shot as often, but compares just as well.

I don't need a lock on my gun and I don't need any extra parts on my gun.
First a built in lock, then what to appease the anti gun morons that populate this country.
I secure my guns properly at all times, I don't need a built in lock to make me safe.

Sorry for the rant, but I just don't care for built in locks on my guns, they serve no purpose for me.

My last auto mishap was a fender bender on ice...40 years ago. Now, I have to have seat belts (and am fined if I don't wear them) and the auto manufacturer MUST install air bags - I need documentation from a couple of sources to have a switch installed to turn thme off. While these don't compare to built-in gun locks directly, they come from the same source - "We will protect you from yourselves, because we are far wiser and statistics frighten us". Yeah, like their laws and concerns will make us live forever. "For the good of...." always has a kernel of truth, but I for one resent the hell out of having it shoved down my throat. But, I guess I'll live with it, until they boil my blood pressure to the point that it kills me.

Add my rant to yours, Mike :banghead:

Mostly it's an aesthetics thing with me; the keyhole in the frame and the little popup doohickey to let you know it's locked are positively hideous. I wish they'd taken Taurus up on the offer of a free license of the much less visually obtrusive and far simpler Taurus lock back in '98 or '99 when Taurus offered it to 'em. NIH syndrome, I guess...

Wasn't that during the Tompkin's era? Perhaps they turned down the offer because they were planning on leaving the civilian market to persue law enforcement and government sales to make Bill Clinton and Tony Blair happy.
