whoops!

So, the other day I stopped at LGS to pick up some new 30-06 brass. Looked at a bag of Win and saw lots of dented necks and brass scrap floating around, so I put it back on the peg and looked at an open box of the Hornady brass. It looked much cleaner and straighter, so I grabbed an un-opened box of Big H and bought it.

Last night I began to FL size the new Hornady brass when I looked closer at the headstamp and saw it was actually (dramatic pause) .270 win! I looked at the box and verified my error. Well move me to France and call me Dumas. I swear I had picked up a box of '06. I guess I better stop swearing. :banghead::cuss:

I had already sized several of them, so I couldn't return them. What to do? I thought of placing a WTT post her on THR, then I remembered what I learned here, that 30-06 is the parent case of the .270. So I fetched my calipers and after careful and studious measurements and trying the chamber fit, decided that I could trim the extra length off the mouth ( .024) and load these for 30-06. They all sized easily in my Lee ss.

The FL sized and trimmed cases dropped right in my '06 chamber and the bolt closed with normal feel. A dummy round confirms feed and extraction.

I NO NOT own a .270 so I will simply paint the head so I can keep these seperate from my other brass.

So , how do you all like the Hornady brass?

For the first 5 years I had my .270, all the cases were .30-06 with Sharpie colored heads.

The 40S&W Hornady cases I have are on their 15th reload and I have scrapped 2 out of 200. I know it isn't the same but, I'm happy so far.

I have noticed when buying reloading components it pays to pay attention.

The Devil is always in the details!!

I'm often amazed at what a sizing die will do. For giggles one night I sawed off the neck of a 30-06 case with my trusty dremel right at the shoulder. After a good swabbing with some STP I ran it thru the .308 WIN sizing die and was shocked to see a nearly perfect .308 case it was still a bit long and needed the neck thinned a bit but nothing that cant be dealt with.
Glad your oops was reversable it is an easy mistake to make, in my neck of the woods as well everything in the BPS nearest me is one big jumble.

I've necked and cut down .30-30 to .357 Herrett for decades and had no issues...

I see no problem with resizing those 270 cases to 30-06 especially since they are unfired and were annealed at the factory. You will probably have no problems with splitting necks and since you don't own a 270 you have no problems with mixing up the rounds in the wrong rifle.

Always look carefully when buying reloading components...

Even if you did have a 270 you won't be able to get a 30-06 cartridge in it. If it was the other way & you sized a 30-06 to a 270 then I would be concerned with marking them.

Actually, you can fire a 270 Winchester in a 30/06 chamber. I'm sure that a .277 bullet rattling around in a .308 barrel wouldn't be conducive to accuracy and might even be hard on the bore but it won't cause high pressure.

I know; I did it once when I was a LOT younger in an M1 Garand.

I was going to add that but decided to leave that info out to cut down on the flames.

I use 44-40 brass to load 410 loads for my little boy. I started by fire forming the brass then loading then found that for the shot it didn't make much difference. Now I just fire form with the first load. I know it doesn't really relate but is still good information.

I'm glad I took the right decision to fix my moment of inattention. It came from what I learned on this forum from some of you who took the time to respond to my OP.

Scout's honor, I will pay more attention when buying supplies.
