Junkyard Shotgun - Im a moron

welp, as with anyone it pains me to admit my failures, but here it is. iv got this shotgun, a single shot, about as beat up of a junker as you can get. when i got it it was rusty, had no firing pin, a broken ejector, no foregrip, the stock was cut off to a pistol grip, and the end of the barrel was a lopsided cut. since getting it i have cleaned the rust off to bare steal, made a firing pin and foregrip, removed the ejector (it had to go) and cut the barrel cleaner, to 19 inches. a few nights back i decided to try and port it. after making 3 fairly nice holes i had managed to destroy 4 drill bits and was frustrated. i ended up getting the dremel out and making 2 horizontal cuts instead. i know by now you all are livid at me, and im pissed at myself. to be honest this shotgun wasnt worth $20 to start with and i got it free and havent put any money into it. its ugly as sin and then some but it goes bang every time, though it scatters wildly. my question is, i fear i made the "ports" to big, is there any danger of it shaving the wads or possibally throwing leave everywhere? theyr about 1/8th of an inch wide. i cant really cut the barrel off shorter without falling a gnats ass under 18 inches.

Sounds to me like you're not a moron. A moron would have done those things to a much nicer gun.

You're a learner.

Junk guns are there for experimentation. Don't sweat it.

You could still shorten the barrel if you permanently installed a "muzzle device" at that time to bring it back into legal length. That device could be anything you bought or made.

At the last inch or so of the barrel which obviously has no choke in it any longer I would not be worried. Just be sure there are no burs to grab a wad on the inside of the barrel.
Try some slugs instead of bird or buck. I was surprised at how well my sawed off single shot shoots slugs even with out a bead to site off of.
Dont feel bad lots of folks have done worse to better guns.

heh, im almost scared to post pictures. and i gues i feel bad cuz the cuts are rough and ugly, and i worry about finnishing them up with a file because it would make them bigger. is there any chance of like the entire petal of the wad going through that port? ill try to get some pics later today, need batteries for the camera

This sounds like fun to me. You cant buy entertainment like this now a days. Yours was bought for free and like you said, it goes bang every time! I like the slug gun idea with rifled slugs. The worst that could happen is you use a dental pick to get the plastic wad pieces out of your ports every once in a while.

actually managed to dig up some batteries. heres the damage. keep in mind i fiddle and work on smoothing out this gun from time to time, but i kinda like the "junkyard" look

Those cuts aint too bad, but that stock could use a little work  but overall not that bad for a junker

main thing about the foregrip is i like the manlicher style and its sturdy. plus, since its only a single shot thats slow to reload, it can be used as a club XD i plan on fabricating a new ejector from a bolt when i get time. by the time im done this gun will be something like 40% "junk" XDD

OP,
Seems like you had some fun with it. Isn't that at least part of what our hobby is about?

Dude, it looks like something out of Fallout. Unique. It's awesome in its own ugly way :D

Now I want to find a CHEAP single shot to hack up fallout style... I'm not about to do something like that to a brand new 870 ;)

Now, I will never feel the slightest bit bad about anything I ever do to bubba up a mosin nagant. :p

Still, like the man said, no money lost, and you're learning, and having fun (it is fun, right?) doing it.

Bubba on!

The other problem you might have is the overall length. Has to be at least 26" to be legal.

That is a video of a shotgun that I was fixing for my brother.
He got that broken old Remington for $20 at a gun show 6 months ago.

All I did not fix it was to oil it and reassemble it.

Here is a shotgun he got for $50 at a gun show two months ago.
I found it and took him to it, but he has since fixed it.
It had a cracked for-stock and a disintegrating recoil pad.
There was internal rust, but the gun shot well anyway.
A soak in Diesel oil got the rust off.

My brother and I have been competing with each other at gun shows to see who can find a better deal on broken down old guns.
Then we fix them.

I think you should keep buying different broken guns and fixing them.
Fixing the same type of gun with the same type of failure over and over is too easy.

I still have a Turkish service rifle I bought for $20.00. No bolt, bolt stop or rear sight. At least it takes a bayonet. I keep on telling myself, "someday the cost of the parts will be less than the value of the rifle"

Waiting for the end of time.......

Probably alright with the ports. Mossberg 190kb had sort of similar shaped cuts on the sides. Make sure to wear saftey glasses or a face shield though, don't want to find out the hard way if its gonna spit at you.

Is it shorter than 26 inches?

Maybe you could trade it for a High Point. Naw just kidding. If your not worried about the stock I sure wouldn't worry about the ports.

I just want to know where you guys find your guns for such a good deal? I never run across good deals like that.

Looks Like a fun project. The only thing missing is a strap to sling that thang on your back pistol grip up for quick access and go out zombie hunting...lol...

here i thought i was gonna get reemed for "kitchen gunsmithing" XD and i do love how it looks very post apocolyptic. im working on a stock for it right now, but old 2x6s dont like to shape well for this kind of thing. iv actually got an idea for a light simple wire type stock that can be removed without removing the pistol grip... ill keep you guys updated!
