As the title says, I defiled a 686. For a long time I have mocked revolvers with optics. I came here today to admit my hypocrisy and eat my humble pie in front of my online shooting friends. Here it is

http://i334.photobucket.com/albums/m417/ljnowell/686reddot.jpg

Anyone else got pics of thier scoped or red dot equiped revolvers?

If it was made after ~1995, they put the extra hole in the frame topstrap for a reason.

There was once a time when I'd have laughed at the thought of optics on anything, and then the years passed, and the eyes got weak. I, too, have a nice little 686 that would look great with an Ultradot on top of it. And seeing (no pun intended) that I cannot see like I used to, one with a bit of magnification would do the trick. So, friend, I support you in this endeavor.

I have been shooting bullseye and I think I have finally gotten to the point where it would do me some good.

I shall not make fun of you.

A- it is a 686. They made a gazillion of them. They are the Chevy Silverado of handguns. Maybe not the most elegant but tough and dependable. Lots of spare parts and aftermarket equipment.

B- my eyes are not what they used to be. A little help would be good.

Yeah Guillermo, I wouldnt say a dime a dozen, because it cost me more than a few dimes, but they are pretty darned common and easily replaceable. I went with a mount that didnt require any modifications to the gun though, since its my wifes gun. She is ever so kind to allow me to use it to shoot bullseye, at least until I buy something else to use.

I'm more pragmatic than idealistic, so I'm for anything that gets the boolits where they need to be. Besides, that red ramp really needed to go - either replaced altogether or usurped with optics. ;)

You took a non-collector gun and modified it to your needs and wants.

I am all over that. :o

BTW,
A few years back, (2?) I picked up a PERFECT 4 inch diamondback. Perfect except that it had two screw holes where someone mounted a scope.

I used to love the holes because they got me a gun at 1/2price.

I also thought about what a moron the owner was that would put optics on a 38 special. It is not a hunting gun?!?!?!

Now I am thinking "hmmmm, perhaps I should use those to mount a scope"

:D

Guillermo:
I'll soon be picking up a 1968 Model 28 with a deep model 27ish polish and the _best_ S&W factory trigger I've ever tried. Original grips too, just a little holster wear on the front of the muzzle and edges of the cylinder. I'm off loading my only MIM & Lock Smith to pay for it.

Which D&T base do you recommend? Should I get an Aimpoint or a Trijicon RMR? :D

Not a 686...

Twice in the nearly seven years that I've had this 6" 629-6 I've mounted this Weigand rail and Weaver 2x28 atop it. Great for my 'mature' eyes - but it looks weird. Fun at 50-75yd, however.

The Hogue/S&W .500 Magnum monogrips help with real .44 Magnum rounds. It's normal wimpier fare usually dictates wood grips (Ahrends).

I've sold the Reflex sight since, it was just too big for the gun, but I'm saving my pennies for the smaller RMR Reflex sight and custom F/A mount.
I want to end up with the F/A having optics and my GP100 'natural' and my Mark II with optics and my Kadet 'natural'. One of each in each caliber. My aging eyes deserve it.

I did the opposite. I picked up a 625 Model of 1989 and removed the toilet paper tube mounted to the top, and returned her to her iron sighted glory. ;)

I tried to shoot it with the red dot on it, I just couldn't get the feel of a red dot on a pistol.

I've "defiled" a many revolver.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a106/celestron4/66001-1.jpg
Most of the time it is for testing the accuracy of various loads like with this Model 66. Now it is getting to the point where the open sights are very hard to see. When shooting bullseye I have used red dot quite a bit and will probably equip a few of my revolvers with them too.

I loved having a dot on my buckmark just couldn't turn it on quick enough to kill a predator if I jumped one doing ranchwork. =[

I gotta say, they are starting to grow on me. Like I posted above, for years I was of the opinion that they dont belong on any handgun, let alone a revolver. Opinions change. Lots of good looking guns in this thread. I particularly like the odd combos of classic and new technology. Something about that says cool.

Well, back from the range, and after shooting BBQ. The red dot worked out very well. Did some timed and rapid fire practice and found that it really, really, helped me. These old eyes just cant focus on that front sight good enough anymore and this is going to help me a lot in my league shooting. I guess I am now officially a convert.

Dangit, TinyGnat....you owe me for a diet-coke soaked monitor & keyboard.....

Doesn't really belong in the revolver section, but yeah I have a scope on my Marlin .30/30...cause my 59+ year old tri-focal lensed eyes need ALL the help they can get...

Some time in 1958 or 1959 a Guy put a weaver shotgun scope
on a S& W 29 Shot a Dall Ram in Alaska So high up he could not bring all
of the meat down off the mountain. It was wrote up in Sports afield
or Field & Stream Mag. His name was something like Al Goreg
shot was aprox 100 running away from him. I was impressed.
Just never could bring myself to drill and mount on a pistol.

You all are making me want to put an optic on my Ruger SBH with a 5 1/2" .44 Mag. How does the weaver mount hold up with the SBH?

Nice looking revolvers, everyone.

I guess its something we all have to deal with at some point. I still dont like the look, per se, but I do like the function.

Have at it, just be sure to post a pic so we can all criticize and enjoy.
