I came across some brass in 270 Win. It is headstamped L C 7 6 unless I am reading it wrong.
What is this brass? All I can tell from asking about is that LC is military brass, dunno if I am right. If thats the case would it be 30-06 brass necked down? Or did they make 270 brass in that headstamp at some stage?
It is about 1mm shorter than my other 270 brass, which has really peaked my suspicion that it's 30-06.
It seems to shoot ok, just interested in the origin.

There is another LC but i would guess not in business in 76. I think you might be right, 30-06 formed to 270. http://cartridgecollectors.org/?page=headstampcodes#L

I have a bunch of LC brass for 270 also DEN43 and SL52, all for 270. I reformed it for my self many years ago and am still using it.

I still have a box of "Alpine" 270 Win ammunition made in the 50's.
This was reloaded ammunition, they took WW2 30-06 brass and necked it down to 270 Win.
I am unaware of the 270 Win ever being manufactured at LC.

I have R-P 270 Winchester cases that are Berdan primed, 30/06 cases that were manufactured for the Bay of Pigs invasion and cases that were recalled and or never issued manufactured Frankfort Arsenal, too late, by the time the Internet came alone I had already loaded and fired them. I retired the cases to the back of a drawer.
Arsenals have manufactured ammo for chambers that were not standard military issue, not easy to find here because the ammo was shipped overseas to be used in captured Mausers etc..
The 270 Winchester case is .046 longer than the 30/06 case, the 270 Winchester case is 2.540 long, the 30/06 is 2.494 long, I would suggest you measure the length of your LC case, if the case is close in length to 2.540, consider there is a possibility the case started life as a 270 Winchester.

It is most likely reformed from .30-06, the parent cartridge of the .270 Winchester round. Nt difficult and used to be common. When the case ius resized for the .270 from .30, it "grows" a bit and is alomst perfect length.
