We are seriously thinking of moving to this area and would like to find out the shooting opportunities available. The wife and I both shoot pistols and have carry permits. I shoot rifles and hunt also varmints to medium size game. I am interested in f-class, and able to shoot long range. Have been reloading for over 35 years.
Thank You
Jim

Several ranges in the area. Eagel Peak (I think is still open), Reds in Pflugervill, Austin rifle club out in Manyor (privet club so you have to be a member) I don't know about the hunting but I know there are dear all over the place at Georgetown lake.
Traffic into Austin is a bear during the work week (ok most any time). But there's good eats and lots of live music if your into that sort of thing. Maybe a bit of a culture shock but I wouldn't live any where else.

Austin is a great place to visit, and our capitol... but please, don't judge the rest of us by some of the stuff you see there. "Keep Austin Weird" is a T-shirt/ bumpersticker slogan for a reason.
Edited: forgot to say: Reds is ok.

Welcome, like it was posted earlier there are a few ranges around. You can go up by Liberty Hill, west of and shoot 1000 yard targets. And yes EaglePeak is open.

My home town is Georgetown, it's a great place to build a nest. Austin has a few shooting spots, most notably Red's (indoors) in Pflugerville and Austin Rifle Club in Manor (outdoor range in eastern suburb of Austin).
On the west side of Georgetown out on Williams Drive, there's Stans Shooting Range which is a little more low key and entirely outdoors. A few miles past Stans on Andice is Astros which is more or less the same, however, they don't allow steel cased (or cored) ammo.
If you make it to Georgetown, there's a wonderful little gun shop across the high school called Guns Plus, I recommend the trip.

Temple Gun Club and Austin Rifle Club are a couple of places to go. I say check out Red's then decide on where you want to go. Welcome to Austin!

I lived in central Texas 30+ years very gun friendly on the down side hunting is very commercial unless you have property or know a land owner be aware
large liberal population 50 radius of Austin, I suggest older folks look 100 miles east/west of 1-35 for lower cost and less stress.:D

That's true about hunting but it's very competition friendly. You can shoot some discipline Sat or Sun every weekend. Also, lots of training opportunity. Plenty of gun stores and gun shows.
AND - the flagship of Whole Foods - your IWB will be snug if you go there.

Thanks for all the reply's, we have relatives in College Station that may handle Hog hunting and Varmints for me. We are primarily paper hole punchers, and I can attempt long range with my equipment. We are looking forward to Georgetown.

When I lived in Austin, my favorite place to go was a podunk outdoor range on Hwy 183 about 15 or so miles north of Leander. I hate indoor ranges, and this place was perfect for me....nothing fance, not busy, and cheap!

Also know that Guns Plus, the gun store in Georgetown that was mentioned above, is currently constructing a range near Manor, about 5-10 minutes North of Georgetown.
And I'll second that it is a wonderful store.

Austin Rifle Club is great for position or bench shooting up to 200y on paper.
Best of the West allows shots on steel up to 1000y (idk if they allow position shooting or just off benches).
Eagle Peak allows bench shooting only to 100,200,300y on paper.
Temple Gun Glub has some longer range (is it 300y or 400y?) on paper.
Reds indoor range is 100y off benches or offhand.

Near Manor? That would be sweet, but Manor is not north of Georgetown.

I don't like williamson county, and unless you like the suburbs and traffic i'd look east or west of Austin.
I never could get anyone on the phone when I tried to inquire about membership at the austin rifle club

I live in South Austin but do most of my shooting at Lone Star Gung Range in Lockhart which is a bit of drive from Georgetown. From Gtown I would venture that Best of the West will be your closest range. The next closest is likely to be Reds in Pflugerville. Red's in Pflugerville is definitely better than Red's South but I'm not a fan. For one, i don't much care for indoor ranges to begin with. Second, their prices are quite high compared to Lone Star. A day at Lone Star costs about the same as an hour at Red's. Red's also forces people to use only their targets and their guns and ammo prices i find to be way too high. The Austin Rifle Club is a good place to go. Membership is reasonable and its a nice range.
