Hi all I'm new here and was hoping to find some help. I know gun basics but am no way an expert. Gonna b a long story so bear with me. To start out I suffered a house fire a few months back and lost most everything but about half a pick up load of stuff. I was renting and didn't have insurance. I had just built a beautiful vertical gun rack with a locking storage underneath. Everything in the storage was fine, not even charring on the boxes of ammo. Now my new henry survival .22 melted beyond recognition, but my old and first shotgun, the stevens 95 came out with some charing on the stock and forend. After talking to a few friends I decided to do nothing but after reading awhile online I decided to c what I could do with it.

Upon examinig it's not in bad shape at all. The fire mostly traveled up high and i think just mainly affected the end of the barrel which appears fine other than some rust. So yesterday I strapped it to a 6x6 hooked up a cord to the trigger and sent 5 rounds through it with no problems whatsover. One of my buddies looked at it and said he thought the barrel was hammer forged and could probably stand alot more heat than most guns.

So as to my questions. The barrel is pretty rusty now after being neglected for the past month or 2 and I was looking for some tips on the best way to clean it up. I know between this and buying a new stock and forend I'll probably put more into it than it's worth, but it's more sentimental value. Also I can't figure out how to take apart the locking mechanism for the break action and the button is sticking. I actually broke the gun down today which is the first time that's happened since I've had it and it's pretty dirty in there. If any one can tell me how to get that button out that would be great because i'm sure it's a mess in there too. Thanks for any help

As far as the rust goes use a good lubing oil. The fire most likely pulled all the oil out of the metal and you need to saturate it with oil. It will soak up alot. If my memory serves me, all you have to do to completly strip the 95 is remove the pins in the side of the reciever and everything will come out. Hope this helps

Thanks. I've already removed the pins and the barrel, trigger and hammer consequently, but the locking mechanism is seperate from these. I'm not sure if I can remove it, but I know it must need some good cleaning.

I've read about using 0000steel wool and/or soaking in kerosene for rust clean up. I'm thinking I wanna start with a least abrasive method and work my way up to whatever it takes so I don't do anything harsher than necessary. I was thinking soaking with some good penetrating oil like marvel and cleaning with a rag as a good start. I'm also assuming that I should get a cold bluing kit to refinish after I'm done with the cleaning. Any advice is appreciated, as I said I'm no expert but I know there r alot on here. If I had the money I would take it to a smith but I'm good with my hands and confident I can handle this with some good advice

Well I was able to remove the locking mechanism for the break action. I simply pushed the locking piece itself in and used some pliers to remove the button. Pretty simple as I thought it might be.

Still not sure what to do with cleaning up my barrel. I've read alot of bad things on the cold bluing on here so not sure if that's my best route. Will just using some good oil on it clean it up and return it to decent condition? I'm not looking for a perfect showpiece, but I do want to treat it as best I can to make it last.

Well I've built a small trough for my barrel and have had it soaking in some marvel. I took it out the other day and scrubbed it with some 0000 steel wool and put it back in for a few more days. I'm not sure how it's gonna come out, but so far not much rust has come off, of course I didn't wanna try too hard. We'll c how it does after a few more days. Still not sure what I should do after I get the rust off. I guess it kinda depends what it looks like. Any advice on what I should do with it would be appreciated.

I searched and searched for a stock and forend but with no luck. At least not the 2 together and the stock I did find was quite used. So I've decided to make my own. Spent a few hours today and got the hole drilled for the mounting bolt and the basic shape cut out and alot of sanding. Still got a few more hours. Should be beautiful though, I'm using some virgin red oak scraps that I had left over from some furniture I made way back. Never quite knew why I had saved them but glad I did!
