Anyone own a Taurus Poly Protector .357?

I am looking for a lightweight carry piece for a lady friend and she is 90% sure she wants a revolver. She has tried many platforms and calibers, and is leaning strongly towards a .38 or .357. I realize that the lightweight would be painful to shoot .357's but those would be rare. I seen a review in a gun magazine about it, but would like to hear from someone that actually owns one.

I picked up a "poly" Taurus a short time ago. Probably put about 100 rounds of 38+P 125gr HP through it and a few 158 mags also no problems at all. For a "small" gun it seems to have a large feel to it. Hope that makes sense.

It does, Steve, and thanks. The loads she like are the 110 and 125 gr .38+p, so that's why the .357 mod over the .38. I haven't been able to find one to put hands on.

According to the Taurus website, the poly protector is actually on the heavy side.
http://www.taurususa.com/product-details.cfm?id=779&category=Revolver&toggle=tr&breadcrumbseries=PR2

It lists the poly 357 as 19.75 ounces, while the ruger lcr 357 weighs 17.1. Heck, if you don't mind sticking to 38spl+P you can get the ruger in a 13.5oz model, or a S&W that weighs around 15 ounces.

Personally I would go with the Taurus over the Ruger... I just simply like it better than the Ruger and it's cheaper. Both are good pistol, Ruger LCRs have been known to have quality issues in the pass and so has Taurus atleast with other models... So the way I look at it go with the one that feels the best in her hand. People make too big of a deal about a few ounces if you ask me. I personally like a little extra heft to my pistols, helps when they become clubs!

Just my opinion, everyone has one.

I'm not sure I'm familiar with the LCR quality problems you're talking about. And I think you're fighting an uphill battle if you're going to try to equate Ruger's overall track record for building quality handgun with Taurus' overall track record.

Just my .02

and fwiw, if you want more heft than the 17.1oz lcr 357, S&W makes an excellent stainless model 60 revolver that can be had around 21 or 22 ounces.

Agreed. I have not heard of a single issue either. I think he is confusing the LCR with the LCP, which did have problems. IMO there really is no comparing Ruger to Taurus, Ruger over the Taurus any day or model.

I don't know if she has handled an LCR, but I will check. Thanks!

I just purchased one of these with the duo tone cylinder and have shot about 100 rds of 38spl and 100 rds of Hornady critical defense 357s with not one issue. I was very surprised of how manageable the recoil is with the magnum rounds. My 125lb wife had no trouble handling it and this was her first time ever shooting a handgun. I think it is a great ccw and a fun little bang gun to play with. Hope you get one and enjoy it as I do:cool:

Not sure what problems you're referring to. There were a few isolated cases of flame cutting when the revolver was first introduced, but that's about it. Mine has been absolutely perfect out of the box and after a few thousand rounds. IMO, it's a better revolver than many of the newer S&W's.

That poly-frame Taurus makes a Hi-Point look downright svelte.

I am not a Taurus basher or hater. I actually admire and applaud Taurus on their innovative ideas and their ability to think outside the box.

But this gun is strange to me. If I am not mistaken it is larger and heavier than the Ruger and S&W guns that have less poly in them.

It seems to me the advantage of having this much polymer in a gun is reduced size and weight

No info on the Taurus. I bought a Ruger LCR. Wife, upon FIRST picking it up, declared it HERS. Oh, well.

I've had her out shooting it and she is quite good with it. It is now HER carry gun.
