Trap Reloading Advice

Just getting started. I bought:
50 lbs. of #8 Lead
1,000 Win AA Hulls
Brick of Win Primers
4 lbs. of Clays
and 1,000 WAA12SL Wads (pink)
I had hoped to reload 1-1/8" oz. Target Loads of #8 Lead like I shoot Trap with but I was too dumb to know that a WAA12SL Wad was different than a WAA12 Wad.
My Lyman maual has lots of Clay's Loads using 1 0z. and a WAA12SL but none with Clays, 1-1/8 oz. & WAA12SL.
Am I outta luck or are the two wads interchangeable if you don't max out the powder load.
Thanks,
John

If you look at Hodgdon's web site, they have current reloading data - I would trust their data over Lyman every time
PLENTY of loads with your components
Save your shoulder, load 1oz and then after you finish these wads, get some to load 7/8oz - the lead (and shoulder) you save will be a lot

Shotgun loads in the reloading recipe books are generally wad specific. My reference says the WAA12 wads are good for loads from 1 oz to 1 5/8 oz., the WAA12SL wads are good for 1 oz. to 1 1/8 oz, and the WAA12L wads are good for 7/8 oz. to 1 oz. loads; the only real difference between them is length. You should be okay for 1 1/8 oz. of #8s with those wads and the proper charge of Clays, if the shell crimps correctly, but I'd probably stick with the 1 oz. loads, myself. Mostly because lead shot has gotten expensive, not due to any particular safety concerns.

If you start punching nmbers, you will find out that 25 pounds of shot is equal to 355 shells loaded at 1 1/8 oz., 400 shells at 1 oz., and dropping down to 7/8 oz that 25 pounds of shot is now 457 shells loaded.
I'd follow what oneounceload says.

Guys,
Thanks for the great advice. It's 1 oz. Loads for me. At least for practice. In my League......I might go up to 1-1/8 oz.

I load 1 1/8 oz up to 1300 fps. That extra speed is important when shooting 8s and 9s, especially if you are futher back than the 16 yard line.

I dropped down to one ounce loads for 16yd trap a few years ago, and never looked back. Less recoil, more shells per pound of shot, seem to break the targets just as well as 1 1/8. I use the Green Duster WAA12SL clone wads, Nobel sport primers, and E3 powder, in Rem gun club hulls, makes for cheap shooting.

I load 7/8 oz in the SLs, no probs at all in at least 30K.

I know a lot of top handicap shooters that use 1oz loads for trap. 16yd trap can easily be shot with 1oz loads and a mod choke.
I load 17.0 grs of Clays for both 1oz and 1 1\8oz.
Good luck and have fun! :D
