Adding rifle sights to an old shotgun

Anyone done it? I bought a JC Higgins 583.25 (not in the recall) with plans to cut off the poly-choke, add rifle sights, limit the tube to hold two shells, and call it an Ohio slugster. Problem is: A set of bolt- or clamp-on sights is about half what I paid for the gun or more.
Since the barrel is fixed and smoothbore, I'd like to mount the rear sight at the back of the receiver rather than on the barrel, just to get that much more precision out of it.
Anyone have ideas? Here is the gun, though there is no good pic of the upper receiver:

EDIT: (Borrowed pic from here http://www.pooshka.com/a.php?aid=13885 but using my own BW) This is what the top of the receiver looks like.

I may be mistaken, but I believe the rear receiver ring is split to allow the bolt handle to pass through it.
That will present problems with a receiver mounted sight.
Also, putting it on the receiver will raise it a long ways from muzzle dia, so the front sight will have to be really high.
I think I'd suggest a mid-barrel rifle sight might work out the best.

Though it may look odd on that model you could go with one of the barrel heat shields that has iron sight on it, like the model ATI offers. The sights would both be on the barrel but it is inexpensive and requires no drilling or tapping.

There is no reason you can't silver solder both front and rear sights on the barrel. I have a flintlock smoothbore "musket" with both front and rear sights. Though the rear is actually in a dovetail (oct to round barrel) the front "turtle" sight is soldered.

Actually soft solder will work very well for the sights. Many years ago I put a front ramp and open sight base on a old rifle. The gunsmith the sights came from said to remove the bluing from the barrel by scraping the blue off. And to prep the sight s the same way. I used just regular solder and there was no extra solder to scrape off, worked great.
