I just bought this die, the add in midway said it was for .27 to .45 cal shell cases. I've reloaded for a long time but this is my first universal decapping die.

It says on the directions "Do not decap live primers!" I've been pushing out live primers for years by doing it slowly and have had no problems but this is the first time I used a decapping die with a spring loaded decapping pin.

This thing shoots the spent primers out of my Rock Chucker so fast they hit the bottom of the press and ricoshet about 6' in all directions.

I wouldn't push a live primer out with this die if for any reason.

I also don't want to have to wear a face shield to deprime my shells. I reload in our laundry room and if my wife get an old dirty primer in her clean skivies, their goes my nice reloading room.

Are they all that way or did I buy the wrong die?

Who makes a universal decapping die that isn't spring loaded? I've always used RCBS dies but I can't use this thing, I'm afraid I'll put a case with a live primer in it by mistake.

I've got a Lyman. It's just a standard looking die with a big open bore and a decapping pin.

The lee is just like the size die without the sizing ring....It works great. I have'nt de-primed any live with it but it has no spring. Just a plain Jane decap pin...

You can remove/replace the spring behind the pin with something solid and it want shoot them out. But the spring keeps primers from sticking to it. I have the same die and don't have a problem since the LNL use a tube to route the spent primers.

I've got the RCBS decapping die. The regular one, not spring loaded. It works great. I've used it on everything I reload from 223 to 45 Colt.

I've got the Lee and have removed many live primers with no problems. You might want to pick up a replacement pin or two as they tend to break if you accidentally try to decap a piece of Berdan primed brass. Other than that, they work great for the money.

I have the same RCBS die and I fixed the problem of popping primers out by simply removing the spring. You can also add a piece of soda straw into the channel of the press ram length sized so the primers all drop into the green tray at the bottom. I was amazed how well that little trick worked.

I also use the Lee Universal Decapping Die. I like Lee's decapping pin method the best over the others. Very hard to break one because of the method of mounting them, they slide out before breaking.
