Before coming into the office Saturday morning I stopped by a dealer near me to buy some ammo (only guy that keeps Black Hills on the shelf). An elderly man had a Savage 24C (.22/20 ga. combination weapon) on the counter before him and was attempting to trade it in on a pistol as his grandkids were petting the stuffed animals along the wall of the shoppe ("Good fox"). The dealer honestly told him it would be better financially if he sold it privately.

I have enough guns. I have been buying guns for 4 decades now. I do not ever need anymore. BUT, I have loved the 24C since I saw one in Uncle Mel's book "Survival Guns" which I purchased at a gun show at age 10 or 11. AND, this is the compelling rationalization, I may later give the gun to one of my nephews.

I gave him $140.00 and he gave me the 24C. Jeebus help me, I'm weak. The weapon is in great shape. The seller told me he purchased it in the early `80s for his late brother as a squirrel gun, but it appears the brother never used it. The butt trap had never been opened. The seller had forgotten that "it had one of those."

Anywho, anyone know of a site thingie that allows one to check out the serial numbers of Savage weapons? Just curious as to its age. TIA.:)

Good deal on the M24.
As I recall, the Savage plant had a fire and lost a bunch of records.
From the Savage Arms web site:
Q. Where do I find information on older model Savage products?
A. Savage Arms is no longer able to access historical information on older Savage, Stevens, or Fox firearms. This information may be available through John Callahan who is an independent arms historian and is not an employee of Savage Arms. Mr. Callahan does not provide parts, gun smith services or offer a locator service for firearms or parts. Please send a detailed letter with:
-Your name and address
-A phone number where you can be contacted if necessary
-The model and/or serial number if available
-Any other pertinent information
Mr. Callahan will respond with a letter detailing his services. Send the
letter to:

Went to the P.O. Box bright and early this morning. On the bottom of the letter I had written Mr. Callahan on February 22nd, he had written "FEB 1975".

A month turn around and he did not send me an invoice. I'll have to write my thanks today.

Maddock, thanks for your help.:)
