Sako-Style Extractor

I currently own two stock Remington 700's and a custom rifle built on a Remington 700 action. The custom has a Sako-style extractor while the two from the factory do not (of course). The custom with the Sako-style extractor has never malfunctioned, but neither has the Remington extractors on the stock rifles. I hear constant talk from people about having Sako-style extractors placed on their stock rifles. I ask them the question, Has your stock Remington extractor ever failed you? The reply is the same, "No, I have never had my Remington extractor fail me", then why have the Sako-style extractor installed?

However, I want to hear what you guys have to say about the Sako-style extractor, and do you all think its a necessary addition to all Remington Model 700 rifles or not. I personally love it on my custom, but like I said, my stock 700's have not malfunctioned without the Sako-style extractor.

Is the Sako-style extractor a non-essential addition to the Remington Model 700 rifle?

Target shooters who used to fire thousands of rounds found that the Remington extractor would wear and this would cause failures to eject.

These SAKO type extractors are a trade off, you loose the excellent breech sealing of the Rem 700 but the extractor edge will last longer.

This is a picture of a customized target rifle bolt, my bud had the SAKO conversion.

In my opinion, it is not worth the cost.

If you only shoot factory ammunition and typically have low round count rifles then I don't think it's worth it. However, I think it's worth the cost to upgrade to a 0.700" PT&G bolt with a Sako extractor and have a custom bolt handle welded to the bolt if you push the envelope in terms of pressure and velocity and you shoot a few thousand rounds per year. Also, if you neck size only you may have harder than normal extraction.

As for extraction issues, my .308 Win had some problems once I stated shooting 200+ rounds per month. That's why I upgraded to a PT&G bolt. My match load consists of a 178gr bullet with a MV of about 2,650 fps.
