I second the recommendation of one of the cantilever mounts like what rcmodel posted. That way you can mount a red dot sight and have it co-witnessed with the irons, and also sitting at the correct height for proper cheek weld. That is the only optic setup I would ever use for a fixed handle AR. If you mount a scope over the handle, there is no getting around the fact that it will sit way too high for any kind of cheek weld, and you can't add a cheek riser to an AR because of where the charging handle is.

Dravur has a lightweight build AR with a Colt scope that is just 'waspish' to point. I didn't get to shoot it, but it really makes you appreciate how light a 20 inch AR can be.

Actually that is not true about the cheek riser, colt in fact made a cheek riser for the fixed stock to go with that carry handle scope they had....ultimatley thats the kind of rifle i want to build

There are a number of snap on risers for collaspable stocks out there.. none have been satisfactory to me. But with enough practice you can overcome the tricky cheek weld. Colt's 'delta' cheek rest isn't adjustable, but it worked.
pikid89, I don't like those risers because they put the cheek weld too far back. I have to scrunch my head BACK to get on one of those, and that is not an ideal shooting position, especially for someone who has always been trained to "turkey neck" out by stretching your neck FORWARD, and who generally shoots nose to charging handle on that type of rifle.
In this day and age, if you want a scoped AR, just buy a flat-top upper. They are cheap, and it avoids the hassle of a fixed handle, and the fact that no matter what you do, you will have a non-ideal setup.

I hear you on the turkey neck, thats what we teach at appleseed, but i was just pointing out that its NOT impossiple to raise the cheek pad on an AR

Putting a red dot on a retro 'slick side' is blasphemy. A thousand gritty triggers well follow you for the rest of your life.

Blasphemy? I think a nice light A1-style rifle with a nice light, quick, and simple co-witnessed red dot would be awesome. But then I am an irreverent bastard, so I don't put much stock in the notion of blasphemy. ;)
I guess if you really wanted to be retro, you could go with an Armson OEG:

I think Larue has one for the CTR that reaches far enough to the front that you can get a forward cheekweld. Quite expensive though.

Rcmodel, I'm not sure that one will clear the triangular hand guards.
I'm looking to put some flavor of Nikon quick-turret scope on it, calibrated for 5.56/55 grainers.
Yeah, I need a cheek piece but that's for another time. :)
