RCBS Primer Pocket Swaging Combo use...

Do you actually "cam over" the ram? I set it up how the instructions tell me to, and this makes it "cam over." I wanna make sure this is correct. Also, will the little visible ring, the crimped primer pocket, not be seen anymore? Never done this before I don't wanna bust the tool.
Thanks

Let me advise you to call RCBS & talk with their rep. I bent several rods following the instructions, and in desperation called. He set me straight in no time, and sent me new rods for small & large primers. I could talk till I'm blue in the face trying to tell you how it is, & their rep can set things straight in minutes. Give it a try.

On some brass you can still see the ring after you swage the primer pockets. Here is a link to a you tube video on using this tool that might help.

When you're first learning the use of the tool, go slowly, more importantly, seat a primer right after you swage the pocket until you have everything properly adjusted. It's easy to overdo it and expand the pockets so much that primers won't seat properly.

Yeah I think a few bent rods are a rite of passage you know.:D But the replacements are always sent for free. I find separating by headstamp helps keep the adjusting to a minimum, at least for me that is.;)

Thx, Parker. Yeah, I had already watched that 4 times, along with several viewings of others, and still ain't got it right. Hey, I really guess I AM all looks. Oh well, I'm gonna call RCBS Monday, as well as go up to my LGS today. That'll give me an excuse to my wife of why I have to go up there.

Seperate your brass. Different makes of brass, Rem, Fed, etc have different web thickness, abd you will bend a rod if you set up for one and then try swaging a different brass.

I am also new to the Rcbs swaging combo. I got the combo #2 kit and I am using my lee c frame press. It doe not cam over so I am going by feel. I did not realize that you could go too far and expand the primer pocket. How much pressure does it take to get it right? Ok I just watched the video link. Near the end there is a clip of what the case should look like o the swager head. I will assume that is what it should look like. I have the hornady single stage press that does cam over, but it is easier to get the cases lined up with the lee c-frame press.

I have the CH4D which sounds much easier to adjust. I can feel when the swager is past the crimp. That is all the adjustment needed I run through 1K of which ever head stamps I pick up. When done I can still see the crimp ring.

You can't go too far and expand the primer pocket, at least not without pushing the entire thing through the pocket, and I'm not that strong even with press leverage. Look at the pictures below. See the arrow? That's the target. You drive the swager button until it is in to the "hilt" as the 2nd picture demonstrates. Try to go farther than that and you can bend the rod, drive it on less than that and you don't swage enough, and you don't get a nice radius around the edge to make the primers slide in easy.
You can't just guess at a depth with a one time adjustment. Sort your brass by headstamp, then screw in the swager a little at a time until you get the button in to the hilt and no more. Not that hard. I've never bent a rod in 40 years, but then I've always sorted my brass and I go easy on the first ones and adjust until its right. Only then you can swage away at a good clip, and never bend a rod.

Thanks GW Staar I was going on what was said in post #4 ("It's easy to overdo it and expand the pockets so much that primers won't seat properly").

I must really be doing it wrong...I've never bent a rod.
I set the die and rod up so that the case head is flush with the base of the die. Then just swage away. I'm using a Lee turret, which does not cam over anyway, and I just run them in until they stop.
I had to make an ejector out of a piece of 1/4" aluminum from the scrap bin. Bored a hole the diameter of the ram, this sits inside the press and lets the RCBS ejector collar hit that and push the case off of the swage button.
