What else do you do?

So do you have any other hobbies besides shooting? The last couple of years have slowed down for me, as I got married and had another kid. With my second kid on the way, I have to really prioritize my hobbies. What other hobbies do you have, how do you prioritize them, and tell us a little about them. Who knows, you may find someone near you to shoot with AND talk about something else.

1. Shooting. This is what I spend the most non-family time doing. Lately it's been hard, but getting my THR fix helps.
2. RX-7s. I have 3 RX-7s that I enjoy playing with. I'm about to undertake a major engine swap in my '95. I'm dropping a 2.0L twin turbo japanese engine (the american ones were only 1.3L) for something around 350-400hp. :D
3. Golf. This is more of an accidental hobby. I get sucked into doing it with co-workers and it beats working.

Aside from shooting, I'd have to say my next biggest passion is Jeeps. '81-'87 CJ7's and 8's. Between my father and myself we have 4. An '85 and an '84 CJ7 and an '81 and an '83 CJ8.

I am also into the martial arts, but I bet a lot of people here are. I study Karate and Judo and have trained a little bit in Silat and stick fighting.

Generally I prioritize them based on how much money I have. Being a poor college student makes it harder. I save up some money for awhile then dump it into one hobby, then I go again saving. So my hobbies happen in spurts. One summer I might spend the entire summer buying jeep parts and wrenching on the jeeps, another time I might spend all my money on ammo and at gun shows.

I am new to shooting, but have taken it up with a passion. My other two hobbies these days are cigars and strongman training. Over the years I have collected several thousand Havana cigars that I store, age and smoke. I love a good cigar. Most of my adult life I was heavily into martial arts and boxing, but in the last year I have begun training for strongman competition (amateur). At almost 53 I am flipping tires, pulling trucks and performing a host of other brutal activities. I plan on competing in July in a local competition. These things along with being a husband, running a business and caring for my dogs keep me pretty busy. Oh yeah, I am also into Yoga.

Hehe, seriously, while I am browsing THR in one window, I am also an an Immortal on an on-line role-playing MUD called Arcane Nites. Ok, so it makes me a geek but I like it!
I also like scrapbooking and I stay pretty active in MOMS club (playgroups etc.).

Other hobbies:

1. Martial arts: I've been in tae kwon do for almost six years and kumdo (Korean sword martial art) for almost four years. I absolutely love both.

2. Ultimate (frisbee): There are very few things I love more than Ultimate. I will play almost anytime, anywhere, until I can't run anymore. The only environments I won't play Ultimate in is strong wind. Cuz that just sucks. Heat, cold, rain, doesn't bother me. Love this sport.

Aside from those, reading is probably my only other passion. Esp science fiction. That's me...

Shooting is probably my biggest hobby. I also role play a bit (think D&D), paint/build models and miniatures, play at several different instruments, home brew mead and wine (elderberry wine, and have a batch of plum mellomel fermenting right now), dabble in photography, play paintball, rollerblade, last summer started getting into motorcycles, and now am starting to get into snakes (just got a boa constrictor imperator ). And in my spare time... ;)

That's in addition to work. And dad and I are talking about trying to get liscensed as a small winery, to sell our meads and elderberry wine...

I have many interests, but not enough money to put into them.

I used to be into video games, but not so much these days. Right now, guns are my main hobby, but it's been hard even to support that lately. :(

I'm in the process of beginning a new career, and if all goes well, there should be more money for more hobbies. I'd like to get more into:
Digital photography, film making
RC helicopter flying

If the money is really good:
Exotic car collecting
Real helicopter flying

The biggest RC I've got is a 1/3 scale Laser and 1/4 scale Cub, on down to 40 and 60 size.
I've got several helicopters and boats.
I have enough ground to fly RC and a PPC (powered parachute) and have a 100 yard shooting range.

The weather here is such that we can fly RC all year long.
But sometimes it gets a little too hot or cold;)

I retired from flying helicopters a couple years ago.
I wanted something to fly out of my place and this is the only bird that I've found that can operate off my few hundred feet of runways.
Fun laid back flying.
It would be fun to put some RC servos on this bird. :D

Let's see there is reading and there is a pile of unassembled model's (military armor). Of course there is the other "hobby" that takes more time, money and effort than all of the above. The rescue squad, my latest purchase was a $575 dry suit. Of course after the last flood call when I found out two days afterwards that the sewage treatment plant up stream from us had had a 5,000 gallon spill/leak in the water I was in up to my chest I decided that I wanted a dry suit as opposed to my wet suit.

My profile states, "Wife 'n kids 'n guns 'n cars 'n 'puters 'n music"

Other than the wife factor being unwantingly removed, that still pretty much applies. I like cars and most of my male lifetime friends/family are into cars including one that has build 1/4 and 1/8 mile cars, but cars are much more expensive to play with than guns. Matter of fact, 3rd Gen RX-7s are pretty high on my list of favorite cars. Most people don't realize quite how fast they are. Handling and balance is just short out outstanding. But I'm a bit more into older BMWs and fast sleeper 4 doors. I had a BMW 535is until last year. Currently drive a SVT Contour. Cars like that... basically anything with four doors that will catch a GT or Z28 driver if he isn't paying attention. ;)

I like driving. Last year, I made it as far west as Utah and as far east as... well, all the way east... to Florida and Mass.

I like movies and music. We have a very decent dollar movie theater here and I pretty much try to take in every movie that comes to it.

Tennis, and to a much lesser extent soccer, are the only sports I ever really got into though I always told myself when I turned 30 I'd buy a set of clubs. I've played exactly 36 holes of golf in my life and all were when I was 16-17. That hasn't gone exactly as planned.

I've played guitar since I was about six, acoustic and electric. Haven't done much in the last several years though. I can play most string and wind instruments as at one time, I planned on a music education major but went in a more technical direction. When the kids are old enough, I'm going to expose them to several instruments... see what they like and what they want to play.

Other than guns I have a few hobbies:
-I reload for .38spl and .357mag and soon .41mag and .45LC
-I collect pipes and blend my own pipe tobacco (I guess the smoking equivelent to reloading)
-I fish
-I camp (occasionally)
-I love reading (history, politics and Jewish studies, Chassidic and other Torah giant biographies)
-I'm getting into golf
-after over a decade break I'm getting back (slowly) into weight lifting

As an Orthodox Jew I don't think listing Torah study as a hobby is accurate since it goes far beyond a hobby- it is the very reason for existance. I learn Torah (Chumash, Tanach, Chassidus, Mishnah and soon I'll be learning Gemora again) many hours a week. Oh, Chumash is the Five Books of Moses, Tanach includes the Writings and Prophets, Chassidus is Chassidic (Hassidic) writings (largely mystical teachings) and Mishnah and Gemora are two parts of the Talmud (Oral Law).

Guitar - used to play a lot (bluegrass/folk/western) but have sort of laid it aside because a few years ago some health problems came up that ruined my voice. Gets discouraging because I used to sound sort of like Glenn Yarborough but now sound like Kermit the frog:(

Camping & hiking & hunting - like to go out and camp in the mountains by myself, especially under a full moon. The outdoors is my "church." Up here, I can find places where I won't see anybody for days at a time. Just like to walk and wander and explore, and see how close I can get to wild game. I've stalked up to within rock-throwing distance of bears, not even hunting or taking a picture, just seeing how close I could get. I have to back off sometimes because I don't want to provoke one and have to shoot it.

I'm not getting out as much like that since we bought a place out in the hills. It's hard to drive somewhere when you have woods to walk in right outside your door. Then there is all the stuff that has to be done around here: Cutting firewood for the winter, cleaning up windfall and diseased trees, clearing out the juniper for fuel reduction, maintaining the buildings, controlling weeds, mowing about an acre of lawn, grading the drive in summer and plowing snow in the winter ... and so on and on and on.

Then there are those pesky coffee cans that accumulate around here. Only way to be safe is to shoot them full of holes before taking them to the dump:D

Nobody collects comic books?

Alas, this used to me one of my favorite hobbies. I started in the 80s and was absolutely enthralled with my favorite characters... I quit when there were so many 'cross-over' issues and you had to buy so many titles just to follow your favorite characters- and then the prices got really stupid. The quality of artwork pulled me back in twice ! in the 90s- but the quality of the writing/storytelling just wasn't there anymore...

Some of my other hobbies (too many !!!):

Hiking/camping/backpacking
snowboarding (a favorite, but don't get to go too much anymore)
Mt. biking
kayaking
Knives !- I love to collect all types- especially stag handled knives
Hanging out with my dog- who is very old and needs special care at the moment

And probably my favorite and most consuming- VINYL albums! I have not played a CD in probably 2 years. I mainly like late 60s/70s rock, progressive, folk etc... and I just invested in a high end Pro-ject turntable that is amazing. Never let anyone tell you that the digitally coded 1s and 0s of a CD can come anywhere near the DEPTH and warmth of good music being played from vinyl on a QUALITY turntable !!!!!!!

the hobby I would like to get into: scuba diving

my main hobby is fishing. shooting is a distant second but this forum has increased my knowledge and appreciation of shooting four fold over what I learned on my own/from dad..

I do mostly saltwater boating for striped bass, blues, cod, flounder, fluke out of Boston Harbor and surfcast at night from RI to ME, but occadionally go back to the sweetwater for large and smallmouth when the tides are bad. Gonna try offshore tuna and shark this year now that I have 4 years experience on the water

Just split one of these little beatuies last year with my father:

http://www.seaswirl.com/Boats/Boats_Detail.asp?bid=108

it's a vast improvement over my last boat. Hope to work in some hunting one of these days too but if buying hunting gear is as addictive as buying fishing gear and guns the wife ain't gonna be happy :)

*giggle* Hi! My name is Chris and my turn-ons are sunsets and pssssst Chris! Wrong interview... Wha? Oh.

Well in-between trying to become an independent business man by raising minks in my bathtub for fun and profit, and my plans for world dominance via my army of flying monkeys most of my time is taken up by work (hardware manufacture and sales for the wireless industry- mainly antennas and multiplex equipment).

I cook.
The wife and I ride the motorcycle (Aprilia Pegaso 650) around the city.
Go to concerts.
Attend counter-cultural events that require the wearing of fancy costumes (usually leather or latex) and make fun of all the 'squares'.

NRA for LIfe,
YOu have a lot of hobbies that I hope to pursue one of these days.

Currently my hobbies include:
-IDPA once a month, range once a month or more.
-reloading
-spending time with my wife and in laws
-collecting WWI and WW2 British cap badges with some Victorian era cap badges thrown in when I find them
-collecting miniature soldiers
-reading a wide variety of topics, shooting, history, mysteries, spy thrillers etc
-collecting hard to find books that are about the hobbies I pursue
-light travelling, rides out in the country, day trips and site seeing
-fishing
-hunting
-archery
-finding new restaraunts unique to the area that they are in (ie, no chains)
-Trying new beer/micro brew beers
-collecting cheapo novelty pocket knives of old cowboy shows/movies (Lash Larue, Red Ryder, Lone Ranger etc)

I used to do historical reenacting. It was fun but very time consuming and it became expensive when I was whole hog into it.

This summer I'll do more hiking and outdoor activities like hiking and camping.

I probably have a couple other hobbies that I pursue more infrequently.

-Jim

PS tried to get back into comic books (X-Men) and baseball cards but just can't justify their cost.

I combined two of my hobbies--motorcycling and writing--and made them into my career. I have written or co-written four books on motorcycling: "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Motorcycles," "Honda Gold Wing," "BMW Motorcycles," and "Harley-Davidson Century." A late summer crash at Brainerd International Raceway has left me unable to ride for most of the coming season so I've decided to try to break into the gun-writing business. I was getting a little tired of writing about bikes anyway.

My other interests are dogs, family, travel, and pretty much any form of motorsports.

The vast majority of my sports/hobbies are things that are either good for me or that save money. Along those lines, you could also include:

Gardening
Gourmet cooking from scratch

Well, I don't have the money or transportation to shoot nearly as often as I'd like to make it a hobby (like five times a year), but as soon as that hurdle is overcome I will be a shooter once again.

Aside from that, I'm a pretty active Christian, but I'm not sure that really counts as a hobby so much as a way of life.

I also really enjoy social dancing (swing and derivatives, tango, blues, salsa, and ballroom), and from that listening to quality music of the right type (big band, pre-big band, tango, salsa, blues, beach music, etc).

I like hiking, backpacking, and camping, but don't get to do it often.

I read a lot online about guns and dancing and Christian-issues.

I'm a computer geek, and it's definitely a hobby-thing.

I workout, but it's not a hobby.

When I can afford it, skydiving will become a hobby.

Well let's see

there's
pretty much whatever the kids are into
target shooting (once a week)
Amateur Radio
Skiing (seasonal)
Camping & Hiking (spring thru fall)
Computers (implement packages for companies, build my own from time to time)
Motorcycling
Gardening (landscape & vegetable)
Photography

I manage these and a bunch of other activities by the season and around the schedule of my wife and 2 boys. It does help that everyone is into the same stuff. It can also makes it expensive when it's 4 x $.

and I'd like to get more time in at the range and start IDPA, start back into Trap, start up golf

Aside from shooting?

I got into doing my own gunsmithing a while back. Along with guns, I also do some amateur machining, modelmaking, and electronics from time to time.

Backpacking, caving, climbing, bicycling. I'd like to get back into semi-serious adventure racing.

Reading, of course. More and more non-fiction of late. I also have a secret passion for Sherlock Holmes stories.

I'm thinking about buying a motorcycle.

Does abolishing the government count as a hobby? :D

Metro...that's funny because my wife just bought me "The Metrosexual: A Guide to Style". :o Like anything else, you have to balance it with doing things like going out into the field, killing a beast, and eating its flesh. :D

Does family count?:D

When time permits:

Cycling: Used to road race many moons ago. Never VERY good, but enjoyed it. Now just happy to get out enough to try to stay in shape.

Home Improvement: Enjoy the satisfaction of doing things myself. Might even try buying older houses to update and sell as a business eventually.

Gear Head: Sold a '71 Camaro recently that I had for almost forever, time for a change. Kept the small block motor (over $3000.00 in motor only) and found a STEAL on a '79 19.5' Sea Ray I/O. Just put the motor in a couple months ago, new exhaust and once over and we'll see if we can remember to put the drain plug IN before we hit the H2O this summer and test the limits of the outdrive :D .

I brew beer and mead in the cooler months. I'm pretty much a computer nerd as well. I build my own systems and play more games the is probably good for my eyes. I play with my smoker in the summer trying to get the barbecue just right. I work out just about every day and hike a lot in the warmer months. I do a lot of home recording. I play guitar, bass, drums, and I'm a singer. I'm usually in at least one band although I am in the middle of taking a few months off. I collect comics on and off. I fish in the summer for bass and carp.(More drinking than fishing when going after carp.) Shoot guns with my Dad. Oh yeah, and I hang out with the coolest, most understanding, fun person in the world...my wife!

I umpire baseball in the spring and summer. The high school season begins here in early April. I work 2-3 games per week. When the summer season starts, add 3-8 tournament games most weekends. Unfortunately, that leaves not enough time for...

Sailing. We own a small sailboat and take it out as we can. Used to be every weekend. Have to make more time this summer.

I shoot IDPA once a month (when baseball allows) and try to practice twice per month. I'm usually lucky to make once practice session per month in the summer.

My kids are also into lots of stuff that we support. I'm coaching my son's basketball team right now. My daughter dances year-round and plays softball in the warmer months (sign-ups in a week... remember that...).

There is also, of course, the never-ending list of house projects. It's never-ending because it seems like I never have time to work on them. Oh, well.
