Greetings,
I was told the military snipers are going to 300 win mag. Anyone has the military bullet, powder and charge information like we have about the other calibers?
Thank you

google tells me it's called the MK 248 MOD 1, which is a 220 grain MatchKing leaving the muzzle at 2850 fps

:rolleyes:Those Snipers will develope a horrible flinch shooting such a hard kicking powerful weapon and will take years to get them retrained.
Can't imagine what they are thinking using all that extra powder.

Nice document. I just read fast through it and it does not say how much powder per case. Just the velocity.

of course it does
however much it takes to meet the velocity requirement (2850 +/-50 fps) using the testing method in Appendix A
it's all right there (and in the ANSI/SAAMI specs). this is how all military ammo is spec'd (factory civilian ammo too).
looks like if you just have to shoot what the military shoots, then you're gonna need a chronograph and 24" test barrel. also, you're gonna need to find a source for that flash suppressant additive and/or coating they mention.

+1
This years barrels take x grains of powder lot # to reach spec x velocity.
Next years barrels and next years powder lot# will take x+/- grains to do the same.
Besides, if they told you how many grains they use, they would have to kill you!
You could pass the top-secret load data for 2,000 yard shots on to the Taliban or somebody.
For that matter, how do we KNOW you aren't the Taliban?? :scrutiny:
AhHA! I thought so! :what:

I can't believe they found a man who could let ten of those things down range, they must be shooting in shifts.

You ain't never shot with the Army AMU guys then I betcha.
I have, and those rifle guys are harder then woodpecker lips.
They shot .300 Mags and .30-378 Weatherby 1,000 yard rifles till the barrels got too hot every day back in the day when I was 5th Army AMU pistol shooting and gunsmithing.
Then they switched over to M-14 National Match rifles and the national match course the rest of the day.
Laying in the sun on a canvas shooting mat, with sand fleas crawling up their pants and biting them, in a leather shooting coat, in 100 degree weather, all day, every day.
And they didn't miss by much, if ever.
If they did, they didn't last in AMU very long!

Really???
A 300 Win Mag isn't all that hard to shoot.
You know, those guys do shoot the 50 Cal in the field. If they can shoot the 50 they can shoot just about anything available, no? Besides, when the lives of their buddies are on the line no pain in the world would prevent them from completing their mission. They stop the bad guys and the bad guys can't hurt anyone ever again!

With the right technic and position it is nothing to shoot recoil. My wife who is also an Appleseed instructor shoots all day Nagant rifles like it is a 22LR.
Last weekend we had a KD long distance shoot and the instructors there shot for 3 days 308 and 30-06 rounds from morning to evening. We even had one guy with a Nagant.
You may want to spend a few dollars and attend an Appleseed. Great fun and great learning.

I guess those little sarcasm faces didn't give me away, I'm a fan of the magnums just trying to have some fun after reading here how the dreaded magnums will lead to everything from blindness to sterility.
I've been a fan of the move to the 300 since I first heard about it, good choice on their part.
I didn't know that the Army had the big Weatherbys in their inventory, I love my 338-378.

There's probably better options than a 220 smk. Recoil is pretty bad; the remaining 220 smk's I have on hand a relegated to fire forming duty. I typically shoot 190smk (available local) and have also used 208amx. Recoil is an issue for me when putting a lot of ammo down range, even w/ the lighter bullets. If you were looking for better long range performance, the Berger 230's are said to be the bee’s knees, but they're costly compared to smk's and amax's. If you just wanted punishment, 240 smk would probably be the ticket… :)
