I would like to load hard cast 158gr SWC using up some w296 that I have left over. Looking for some hotter loads just for fun. I am having trouble finding lead data for this.

Perhaps I shouldn't be using lead. I also have 158 gr jacketed HP that might be better.

I understand W296 is touchy and should not be underloaded.

I also only have small pistol...not magnum primers.

Anyone with some thoughts and data input?

I suspect most will tell me to use another powder. I also have W231 and titegroup but was hoping to use up the W296

No reason not to use 296 with cast bullets but in my opinion you need magnum primers. There are those that load 296 with standard primers without issue though.

Just use Hodgdon 158 jacketed starting loads and go from there. http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp

Day before yesterday I loaded 15.0 grs. of H110 (Same as WW296) over a 358429 HP bullet (168 gr). Ran right at 1200 fps out of my 4" Security Six. Tried to do an expansion test with water filled jugs but the darn thing penetrated about 3' of them and STILL exited!!
This a plain-base bullet but I figgered out a way to apply a gas check. No leading.

158 gr. lead 14.5 gr W296 38,000 CUP. Use Winchester or Magnum Primer.

I use 17 grains. Started with 15 and it was kind of wimpy.

Nothing. I use standard primers in everything except 454 Casull. Switched because I pierced a primer with a hot load. 454 runs at about 50% higher pressure than 357 so I wouldn't worry about that.

If you use a standard primer make sure you have a heavy crimp. Heck, with that powder you should make sure you have a heavy crimp anyway.
