Went to the gun show and came home with a Remington model 1917 that is in great condition. Barrel in very good to excelent condition. Would like some help determining when it was made and possibly rebuilt. The serial number is 28XXX and the barrel is marked 10-18. The stock is marked 1J behind the triger guard. It appears to be marked in ink and outlined in a square.

Paid $355. Is this a good price?

One more question concerning barrels. it seems like every 1917 I have looked at have barrels made in 1918. Did they make a boat load of barrels in 1918?

Thanks in advance.

Ray

For $350 I'd say you did pretty well nowadays.
My Winchester has a barrel date of 11-18 and they made a couple million for WWI between all three mfg's. Musta been tooled up right well in '18 thinking they were gonna be THE preferred US rifle. Oops.

Ray www.armscollectors.com is a real cool site too. Check it out and let us know what you think. For instance, Remington M-1917 ser. # 28456 was made in Jan. 1918. You might get lucky and find where the rifle was sent to.Like I said, check it out.
