So Im still new to reloading and was wondering, lyman has max length of .223 @ 2.260 were as others has it @ 2.2, as long as i dont go over 2.260 and stay under 2.2 I should be ok correct?

SAAMI MAX OAL for the .223 is 2.260".

I am not aware of any reloading manual saying MAX OAL is 2.2".
If they did, they are wrong.

The actual OAL you should use depends on the bullet you use.

Lighter bullets will never be 2.260" or they will fall out of the case.

Longer bullets might be seated to MAX length of 2.260".

Your reloading manual will have a recommended OAL for each bullet weight listed.

SPECIAL NOTE ON CARTRIDGE OVERALL LENGTH “COL”

It is important to note that the SAAMI “COL” values are for the firearms and ammunition manufacturers industry and must be seen as a guideline only.

The individual reloader is free to adjust this dimension to suit their particular firearm-component-weapon combination. This parameter is determined by various dimensions such as

1) magazine length (space),
2) freebore-lead dimensions of the barrel,
3) ogive or profile of the projectile and
4) position of cannelure or crimp groove.

Which is the long way of saying either on is fine, as well as possibly longer, but only if it works for your gun. Generally there isn't much reason to go shorter unless you are having a feeding related problem and that solves it.

Note in the Lyman #49 load data each bullet weight they list has a different suggested OAL they tested that data set with.

Some are shorter and some are longer.
But none are longer then 2.260".

yes i seen that but some manuals dont have some of the powders i use so i use different ones as some also give different charge weights of powder Im just making sure that if im off a little in my over all length as long as i dont go over 2.260 or under 2.2 i should be fine. I have alot of range brass and some of it is shorter cases than others so i have a slight variance in length from my seating die

Case length has no bearing on OAL when you seat a bullet.

If you are getting OAL variation, look for another reason, as case length has no bearing on it.

That is determind from the base of the case in the shell holder to the bullet ogive contact inisde the seating stem.
