Our Commander of American Legion Post #98 in Coral Gables,Florida has asked us to take to the internet,newspapers,any media, the fact that the American Legion membership is shrinking.Posts are closing and turning in their charters. A sad situation.

The World War II and Korean War Vets are diminishing by the day and us Viet-Nam guys are graying.

He points out that many Gulf War,Iraq and Afghan guys are totally unaware that the American Legion exists. We need new members quickly to carry the torch and message forward.

So all out there that are eligible and currently don't have American Legion membership,please join up! It's only about $25 a year and our future generations really need the Legion to carry on our great traditions.

The American Legion sponsored me for a week-long trip to Eastern Washington University to attend a program called Boys' State in the summer between my junior and senior years of high school. Basically a boys only program (there's a separate one for girls) to learn about how the government functions at the state level. I could go on and on about it and how much I learned at the event, but that's not the point.

The point is, I wouldn't have been able to attend if not for the American Legion, and aside from that involvement, the unfortunate truth is I have no idea what the American Legion really does...

I'm a veteran myself, and I haven't thought about Boys' State (or the American Legion's involvement) in a long time. I'm going to take this opportunity to do some research and find out what they're all about.
