View Full Version : What caliber is your primary CCW?
Alan Fud
January 31, 2003, 02:47 AM
I carry a 1911 most of the time ... either my Para-Ordnance C7.45LDA or my C6.45LDA when deeper concealment is needed ...
http://fud-files.netfirms.com/image/private/guns/f90.jpg
... in both cases, that makes my caliber a .45ACP. What about everybody else? What caliber is your primary CCW?

I voted .45ACP because I currently have a choice between two Colt 1911s. But I also have two Glock 19s that I occasionally wear.

I don't CCW unless out in the woods or road tripping
Taurus Ti sunb .357 for everyday short day hikes, cross contry sking or fishing with friends locally
or a 4"-6" Dan Wesson for the more remote solo trips, ocassionally a DW .44Mag for the really isolated trips (often!)

Hard to define "primary".
I prefer to carry my 1911 whenever possible, but I always have my KelTec P11. And even with my .45 on my belt, the KT is usually in a more convenient pocket, making it more likely to be deployed first in a surprise situation.
So that makes my "primary" caliber...I dunno.
I picked .45, because in a perfect (sheeple-less) world, concealment wouldn't matter.

I currently only have a 9mm as a CCW option, but as soon as I can afford it I'm getting a compact model 1911

I carry my KP95DAO most of the time. However, the load I use pushes a 125 gr JHP out at 1350 fps. So It's really something more than an ordinary 9mm.

During cool weather, I usually carry a 9mm (Smith 439), but in hot weather, a 357 Magnum (Smith 640) in a IWB holster. The 640 is smaller and conceals better when wearing less clothing.

If, by Primary, you mean the "main gun" in your CCW arsenal, the one you carry when you're "carrying", then I voted .40.
If, on the other hand, primary means the one you carry most often, even when you're just running to the grocery store, etc... then oops... That'd be a .38.
I'll always consider my 642 a BUG, even though it gets carried by itself quite often. But when I take the time to put on the gun belt, strap on the holster, consider the day's attire to fascilitate concealment, etc... Then there's a .40 on the hip, and a .38 in the pocket.

Ikari, someone's going to say it, might as well be me. Unless you plan on shooting that camera, may one suggest finger off the trigger?
I'm odd, I have 3 carry weapons depending on...well...mood and of course what I can conceal.
My preference is to conceal my GP-100 loaded with .38s. More ofthan than not, though, I find that I am more able to conceal my Baby Eagle in .40. If that can't be done, the Bersa in .380. The Bersa also serves for a quick errand piece when I'm running to the store for a slurpee or what not. Actually, if I'm going to 7-11 late for anything I tend to try to conceal the 870, doesn't always work out.
I do practice frequently with all three including from draw, in double and single action, flipping off safety and so forth. I've become very accustomed to all three (the baby eagle and the bersa are very similar in operation) and from point of draw to fire is second nature at this point.

Currently 9mm in a P7M8.
Been trying to decide between that gun and the 1911 platform, so not too long ago I was carrying a 45ACP commander and am currently building a commander in 10mm.
Decisions, decisions. Sometimes I feel like I should own only one kind of handgun, but I already have too much monogamy in my life :D .

9mm, with 115 gr. +P loads.
Until last summer, I didn't carry. And we were mostly in condition white. But then a drug dealer moved in right across the street in our nice suburban neighborhood. My house gun at the time was a Dan Wesson .357 with a 6 inch barrel (using .38 +P's).
Last summer I got the concealed permit and a Kahr K9 to carry in a fanny pack. But as fall came and I could start wearing a jacket, I got a Ruger KP95DC and have carried that, both in OWB and lately in a IWB holster. I like it more than my Kahr! I'm just hoping I can find a way to conceal it this summer.
By the way, the city LEO's helped us get a neighborhood watch going, and combined efforts got the drug dealer out of business. And my wife and I are making efforts to stay in condition yellow.
Stay safe!

It gets tiresome hearing 'the mouse in your pocket beats the real gun at home' type drivel.

I picked a 9mm for my primary carry for the simple fact that I like to practice and 9mm can be had for $5.00 a box if you know where to look. All the stopping power in the world is useless if one can't hit the mark.
