As far as I know, nobody in the USA has even TRIED.

Browning designed it. After 60 years or so, ain't nothing better.

It got replaced in some applications by the minigun. But its still our only heavy MG, right?

Of course, the scale seems to be slipping a bit, too. Compared to the SAW, some consider the M-60 to be a heavy MG...

What's the comparison with the Soviet-bloc 12.8mm (?) heavy MGs?

Dave, the M2s been around a little longer than 60 years. If I recall correctly, it was originally designed during WW1 as an anti-tank gun. I think it went to prototype in 1919, and was finally accepted by the army in 1923. It's gone through a number of revisions since then, but the basic concept is still there.

What heavy?

Hum....

How about Mama Cass?

The only other true "heavy" to see widespread use are the Soviet 14.5s...

Why, the M-16AA of WW II fame. Four Ma Deuce mounted on the M-3 halftrack. All the fun & firepower and you don't have to carry it or the ammo. One of it's first "success" was a P-38. :uhoh:

Ours wasn't all that heavy, compared to the 63 tons of steel that carried it around!! :D
Detachment Charlie - I'd say light artillery!

Anybody ever play with an M-240? They're sweet too! Together, they make a wonderful symphony... (one for troops, and one for vehicles... ok, troops too, but don't tell anybody)

I believe FN has a .50BMG machinegun in development. Small Arms Review had an article on it not long ago. IIRC, it's intended to be used as a coaxial on the M1 Abrams.

Soviet DshK38. the infamous "Dashika" Not nearly as well made or reliable as Ma Deuce, but a formidable weapon nevertheless.

FN's .50 is the U.S.'s .50, they're using the M3 aircraft versions and beefing them up. The rate of fire will be 1K+ rounds per minute. The M3's had alot of problems due to weak springs and the buffer not being able to stand up to the rate of fire, FN has overcome these problems.
