Glock vs KKM

I installed a KKM drop-in barrel into my Glock 17L. It fits like a glove. I mean it has maybe .001" of clearance in the lockup areas whereas the stock barrel has more than .004".

I tried some 147 HST benchrested at 15 yards. Here's how the stock barrel shoots them:

And here's how the KKM barrel shoots them:

I also shot FCAE, WWB, PB, RA9T, and some 124gr handload I slapped together. In almost every case the KKM barrel shot 50% smaller groups. The only exception was my 147gr handload using Bullseye and The Fiochi 147gr FMJ crap I bought.

These aren't the best groups, but the heat and the flies were spoiling my focus. Overall, the KKM barrel cut the groups in half. At $165 it is a bargain.

I like my KKM barrel for my G21, but my factory Glock barrels sure shoot a lot better than the OP's!

The Glock OEM barrels in my example pistols exhibited reasonable accuracy. I replaced the OEM barrels with KKM to eliminate potential problems with lead bullets. I’m not an experimenter/handloader but rather a reloader that shoots from standing position as opposed from bench rest. The KKM barrels appear to be true drop in replacements for the OEM barrels. Bar-Sto I’ve also used but those appear to be semi-drop in that required minor fitting. I would not hesitate to acquire additional KKM barrels if so needed.

So I'm sitting there trying to squeeze off a shot, focusing, concentrating, controlling my breath... and this fly lands on my nose.

Grrrrr.

Then theres two flies, and I'm sweating profusely which is why the flies are attacking.

The problem with his particular Glock, I think, is the factory barrel can move down in the locking block while in battery. I have another that can't, but I haven't shot it yet. In theory, as the barrel snd slide recoil together with the bullet still in the bore, any looseness between barrel and the slide will cause the groups to open up.

Glock & KKM? I'm a believer.
25 yards, 2 hand weaver, Glock 29 with a KKM .40 conversion, Rainier plated bullet hand loads. I'm sure the flyer in the upper right is my fault.

The stock barrel did not shoot plated bullets very well.

One other thing I forgot to mention is the beautiful machining. The crown, for example, looks like it was cut by a benchrest rifle smith. The surface finish is superb. It's like a little jewell.

And the fit. I guess I got lucky: this Glock has maybe .005" total play between the slide and the frame. The KKM barrel has .001" total clearance in the slide. The chamber is visibly concentric with the bore, unlike a Jarvis barrel I used to have. The chamber throat/freebore is .359". The groove diameter is .355". I already have dreams of lead propelled by 231...

Hopefully it won't KB.

My KKMs barrels always gave tighter groups.

I am not buying a KKM barrel because, unlike 918V, I am not a good shot with a handgun.

Was something wrong with your stock barrel? How many rounds did you put through it before shooting that group? Maybe I'm just ignorant, but those groups look pretty awful considering it was bench rested at 15 yards, even for a Glock. I've seen people shoot their Glocks off-hand with better accuracy than that. Something just smells fishy here...

Yeah. It was inaccurate. Look at the before and after pics. The KKM barrel cut the groups in half. I too heard of people shooting magical groups off hand with their eyes closed while texting, but for some dog gone reason my guns just won't cooperate.

918v- I meant was something wrong with it other than inherent inaccuracy? In other words, was it shot 50k+ times and worn to crap before that pathetic bench-rested 15 yard group was taken? With pictures like hentown's showing relatively similar groups at 100 yards, it's hard for me to believe that a new Glock barrel would shoot so poorly at 15 yards.

Have you ever ladder tested handloads to find a combo your gun really likes?

Yes, although there's not much to work with given the 9mm's small case capacity. With 147s I tried Silhouette, WSF, Power Pistol, N320, N340, Longshot, HS6, Bullseye, and Titegroup. The only powders that shot consistent 1" groups were Bullseye and Titegroup.

Interestingly, the KKM barrel hates my Bullseye load. It patterns about 5" at 15 yards. It also hates Fiochi 147 and 158 FMJ.

The factory barrel occasionally teases me with 1" or better groups but it's not consistent. The KKM occasionally disappoints, but 90% of the time groups under 1".

The gun is brand new.

A 5.7" 100 yard group is great, however five groups back to back would be a better indicator of accuracy. I have a couple of 1" 15-yard groups and I'm sure if I were shooting them at 100 yards the would have been similar to Hentown's. The problem is they do not repeat. It took alot of load development with the factory with all the usual powders to settle on Bullseye for the 147s. It took almost no effort to beat it with the KKM barrel. That's my point.

This isn't my first Glock. I went through the same thing 15 years ago. Glocks are not magical platforms. They don't shoot 1" groups out of the box.

At 15 yards? I've never tried, but I would have thought that nearly any of my handguns could do that with good sights and a bench rest (and a good shooter).

I guess when I'm consistently shooting 4" groups off hand at that range with my G21, I'm a much better shot than I thought. :)

If you can't group well with a new Glock, I would be suspicious of the ammunition and try several different factory loads. Out of the box, I have gotten 1" shot groups (measured center-to-center) at 15 yards with two Glock 17s using Montana Gold jacketed reloads.

Heck, I even got around 1" shot groups from well broken in Glock 22 using Lone Wolf 40-9 conversion barrel and Berry's plated reloads (targets on link are one inch squares) - http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?p=7266869#post7266869

All the time? Or just sometimes? Cuz if you think Glock will do 1" all the time you're wrong.

What kind of bullets?[QUOTE]

FWIW, I don't routinely shoot for groups with my G29 @ 100 yds. Was just curious, one day as to what it might do @ that range, so I fired off those three shots.

I'm pretty sure they were 180gr. Precision Delta fmjs. Probably loaded with AA#7. My "quote" screwed up!
