So I'd like to hear your opinions. I have about $800 to blow on an evil black rifle. Accuracy and Reliability are top priorities. Help me do my part to help the economy:)

I vote BM too. Assemble the lower for your own savings and experience.

A retarded monkey could do it 3 hours, and it only took me three and a half!

Assuming you can find one that works, a G3 sporter from CAI. $350 to $500 bucks, dirt cheap mags(better hurry though!), popular caliber and a good number of replacement parts.

Of course, some people don't like the ergonomics. Cheapish DSA FAL then?

Aren't all ghillie suits homemade? Well, except the cheap-o ones that wouldn't work, that is...

You do have a point there.

I took a green surplus mechanics overalls and a cammo "poncho" of some kind of rubber cammo netting, cut it so that it had arm and legs section, rather than just one huge mat, and sewed it to the overalls at key points.

Works rather well, but the netting tends to catch on twigs and such.

I use it for paintball :D

It will always be the FNFAL, even Jesus wasn't given credit for who he was in his OWN village. When will you people learn?:D

Well you said battle rifle and not battle carbine so that rules out all of the little guys. Your price range rules out an M1A, BM59, H&K 91 or a AR10. This leaves the FAL (an inexpensive one only), M1 Garand, or a CETME.

You could get a FAL for $800, and they are excellent rifles, but that wouldn't leave anything for magazines or ammo.

I have no experience with the CETME, but I have heard a lot of good comments about them, they are very affordable, and magazines are cheap.

Then there is the classic M1 Garand. For $800 you could get an M1 and a couple thousand rounds of ammo, and still have money left over. Best of all the ammo comes pre-loaded on 8 round clips!

Assault rifles are a different story, then I think it's a no-brainer, get a mouse gun from any of several makers.

There have been quite a few recommendations for a Bushy. Here's my experience with BM (to be fair probably not representative though there are those that have indicated they have had the same problem).

2 Weeks ago I had the same question.

2 Weeks ago I bought a BM XM15E2S 20" Fluted Barrel (A2)

2 Weeks ago after firing a measly 10 to 20 rounds it started stovepiping

2 Weeks ago less two days - having fired about 100 rounds and having most of them stovepipe and having exhausted all probable causes and corrections I returned the POS to the dealer.

$839 NIB + Tax equaled $910.

The $910 is gone and I still don't have my rifle and probably won't for another 3 or so weeks.

Go with Rock River Arms or DPMS if you want an AR (and who doesn't). FWIW BM will never get another penny from me.

I know, I know - BM has a great rep but all I've got to say is that in 30 years of purchasing firearms I've never ever gotten one as hosed up as the BM rifle I bought 2 weeks ago. YMMV...

Ohio Rapid Fire Imbel FAL.
Just a though...

An odd-ball suggestion for you - a Saiga .308. It's the AK action (actually, the RPK receiver, which is heavier and stronger than the AK), has a 22" barrel, takes 8-round magazines (but can be modified to use Galil 30-rounders), is 2 MOA accurate at 100 yards (better than many battle rifles I've shot), and is as tough as its AK ancestry will allow. Best of all, retail price is usually well below $350! For your budget, you could buy two, convert them to use hi-cap magazines, and be on your way.

Daewoo DR-200, a AK/AR hybrid with gas reg. 650,000 ROK soldiers can't be wrong. I like mine better than my AR and AK. It's cheap, collectable, reliable, and accurate. Best damn bargin in my book.

There are still plenty of good FALs for under $800. Even paying the insane $350 for an STG kit from FAC, you can still put together a FAL for under $800.

$350 for STG kit from FAC
$170-$200 for receiver (depending on whether you want the foreign-made Imbel or US made Coonan)
~$100 for US made parts (6-pack from TAPCO, with FSE hammer/trigger/sear)
~$75 FFL fee, shipping charges, sales tax if applicable

Go to www.FALFiles.com/forums, you can probably find someone in your area (no matter where you are, long as its the US) that has the tooling and has already done one build, so you save the gunsmith build fee. The numbers I used above come out to $695-$715. And thats only if you MUST have an STG kit (there are cheaper sources than FAC, also). Someone on the FALFiles, in the Marketplace, had FAL kits for I think $146 or $164, something like that.

Or you can get the DSA STG-58 from DSA (duh...), dealer price is like $799. Wait a while and get some mags (for $4 each, used, from TAPCO. I've bought them before and they clean up just fine).

AR and AK are good choices too, depending on what you want the rifle for. I dont have any firsthand experience with the G3/CETME. If you can find one that isnt a lemon, it should be good enough for .gov work.
