What do you consider "long range" and what kind of groupings are you expecting? Does the $400 include optics?

$400 does not include optics.

Actually, scrap the first part of my question. $400 doesn't give you much to work with, so I'll just suggest a Stevens 200. It's a good base platform that can be easily built on.

Stevens or Savage in that price range, most accurate for the money.

If you can get a Savage with the Accutrigger for that price, that would be the way I would go.

I saw a Weatherby Vanguard yesterday for $399. I know they guarantee sub-MOA (0.99). It'll be a little difficult to find the Savage Accu-Trigger less than $400, but if you can, I'd suggest that one, too.

Savage has dropped the Stevens 200. There are a few still available, but mostly in less popular calibers. At $400 or less the Vanguard is the only option I'd suggest. Other than save some more money.

For $400,you could probably find a used Savage 10FP or 12 in that price range.
I've bought several used for $300-450,you just need to search for them.

Try buying one. There are a few available in the less popular calibers, but most are almost impossible to get. Suppliers are being told there will be no more. Unless Savage changes their mind the Axis has taken their place. Remington never really stopped making the ADL, but it has not been in their catalog or on their website in years, so who knows.

dbrown, You've been asking lots of this vs that questions all day. If you want the best budget rifle for the money today look at this.

You won't find one under $400, but right at $450. It is the best deal going right now. Best trigger out there, far better than the accutrigger, a much better stock than the Savage, the 5R rifling in the barrel is outshooting most everything made costing 2X as much. They are not too heavy like the Weatherby's. They come with scope bases, have 60 degree bolt lift and are USA made. I aready own more rifles than I need, but one of these will be in my safe ASAP. I'm just afraid it will easliy outshoot my much more expensive rifles.
