This weekend I did some shooting at my in-laws in MD. Among other stuff, we shot a bulk / value pack (100) and found 1 of these.

I thought it was interesting because of the thousands of WWB .9mm rounds I've fired, I've never had any problems, let alone seen anything like this.
So, what could have happened if I fired this round? Something similar to the consequences of set back? Anyways, just thought I'd share.

One bad round in thousands for bulk ammo is pretty good to me. As to what would have happened if you were to fire it, I'm pretty certain it would not even chamber.

If your chamber is generous enough to chamber that round, it would not cause any problems firing it pressure wise. WWB 100 round bulk packs are known for that kind of stuff just do a search on this forum, and you will find quite a few examples. I still buy it when I find a good deal, I accept a certain margin of error in cheap ammo. As long as you keep your eyes open like you did you will be fine.

Minor correction, it's 9mm, not .9mm.

Thanks for the replies. I should add that I'll continue buying WWB in all calibers I shoot when I go to the range.

I have had several of these and some in worse shape in WWB bulk packs. I sent the bullets and the box tabs that had the lot numbers to Winchester and they sent me a couple of coupons for free boxes of 50 rounds. I was satisfied with the customer service plus I learned a valuable lesson; inspect each round before loading. One of these rounds caused a difficult jam while at the range as I loaded the magazine while talking to a friend. No harm to the gun. It just got stuck on the way into the chamber and I had some trouble dislodging the round from the gun. I find WWB dirtier than most other brands such as AE, Blazer Brass or S&B. Just my opinion on the dirt. Fact on the curled casings.

Good eye Chris. I'll blame it on the iPhone ;)

I'm 99.9% sure one that bad would not even chamber, unless you're feeding 9mm's into a .40 S&W heheh. If you happened to put it in a mag like that and cycle it, the gun would not lock into battery. Really its not the end of the world. They are loading millions of rounds so inevitably there will be some brass that gets boogered when they seat. I've done it a number of times on my press, and you cannot get the bullet to chamber with even a minor deformation.
I've found a number of oddities like LR primers in a SP primer box, factory remington 9mm with a split case, boogered cases like this. You just need to give the cartridges a once over while loading them and shooting them.

I purchased a bulk pack of .22 a couple years ago. I found three cases that were primed and had powder but no bullet. The powder was all over the bottom of the box. It happens occasionally. They are putting out millions of rounds per year.

At the range I work at we have a "dud bucket". I have seen quite a few of these from most ammo manufactures. As a RSO we pull them out and if they will chamber in our gun they are happily shot by us. Don't worry, keep shootin.

I see more of this with all the bulk sales and loose packed ammo these days. You just got to check 'em when your loadin'..

If it will chamber I would have the bbl looked at. Just going by pic, you did not send measurment.

If you're going to shoot at your in-laws, you should check every round first, to make sure each will chamber ;-)
Seriously though, I use WWB but have never run into a damaged case mouth Yet, that I can recall. When our PD authorized semi-autos, we were instructed to field strip our pistols and check that each and every round of issued ammo would actually chamber properly in our pistols. I think the kind of defect you've pictured could happen with any type of ammo. I have done it myself a few times while reloading ammo. The only malfunctions I ever had in my Pre B CZ75 was a couple of my own reloads with that defect. They wouldn't quite go into battery...ymmv
