AR Upper Suggestion

I'm starting a new build. Actually my wife said; "you love building them for everybody else, why don't I have one?" Wasn't quite that bad, but I got the point. Anyway, I think I'd like to switch things up and get an upper with a side charging handle. I want her gun to be very distictive, and I also think she would operate a side charging handle better. Who makes a quality upper in that configuration? Thoughts? Thanks guys.

That's a cool idea. I don't know about the side charging AR's, but these seem to be pretty decent from what I read. http://www.americanspiritarms.com/upper-receivers/asa-ar-15-m4-side-charger-upper-receiver-without-carrier/

Thanks Cold. The first thing I look at is where it's made. I appreciate that it's made in the USA. I'll do some research on it. I'm going in blind on this, as I have no idea how a side charging handle works with a standard bolt carrier, but I guess I'll find out.

Young manufacturing does one. There may be others.

The American Spirit Arms (http://www.americanspiritarms.com/upper-receivers/asa-ar-15-m4-side-charger-upper-receiver-without-carrier/) side charger is a good choice. The charging handle on the ASA side charger does not reciprocate with the action of the bolt.

Mega (http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=1657) has a side charger that's a lot less $$$ but the handle does reciprocate.

I've considered changing my Grendel to a side charger and choose the ASA, I couldn't justify spending the money, would rather have ammo.

Wife rifle? Build her a HELLO KITTY (http://blog.riflegear.com/archive/2007/12/26/hello-kitty-ar-15---evil-black-rifle-meets-cute-and.aspx) rifle. Where the evil black rifle meets cute and cuddly.

Alexander Arms makes a pricey side charging handle upper I believe. Pricey but good reviews. Never tried one myself.

Fulton Armory sells a side charging reciprocating BCG, and uppers that are cut for them.

I wouldn't be in a hurry to go to the side charging handle. It's better technique to use your support hand to charge anyway and for a righty it's hard to beat the BCM/Vltor Gunfighter charging handle. As far as the upper, there's a good chance she'd like a lightweight profile barrel since you can shave off 5-8 oz over a standard barrel.

I'm unfamiliar with the details of the side charging handle but I like your way of thinking on this. I second the lightweight barrel idea, too many nose-heavy ARs out there as it is. Of course I'm making assumptions here, for all I know she wants a .204 Ruger upper with a 24" barrel and a bipod.

Thank you all. Reloadron, If I brought home that pink rifle, I'd be dodging bullets. :o) I like the idea of the lighter barrel too, and will pursue that. Just so you know the kind of woman this gun is being built for; for christmas she bought me a .338 lapua. last week for my birthday she bought me a CC S&W hamerless .38 and a Colt .45 Government. yes she looks as good as she sounds. This will be one kicka$$ AR! I'll post a pic down the road as it comes together.

Hi Ya Chief

OK, Hello Kitty is out and the black rifle in. :)

Yeah, I can't see my wife with one of those either. Remember, pics when it is done.
