The rifles are common.

Why are the mags as rare and expensive as hens teeth?

The reason we can get AK-47 magazines so cheap is because the caliber is effectively obsolete in Europe, with everyone having switched over to 5.45x39 or another caliber. The 74's, on the other hand, are still in widespread service, so you don't have a glut of military surplus magazines flooding the market.

The 5.45 mags were never as cheap(or available) as the 7.62 mags. The 7.62 AK has been in production for 65 years, therefore the mag supply is tremendous. The commercial 7.62 AK(type) is much more popular than the 5.45, therefore the commercial mag makers make/sell many more than the do the 5.45's.
I don't see why someone doesn't make a follower that will allow the 7.62 mags to handle 5.45 unless there is more difference in the mags than just that part. I don't have any 47 type mags here to compare with the 74 type but compared the AR type 7.62 vs 5.45 and the follower shape was the only diff I saw w/o more detailed measurements.

Supply and demand. The 74 mags were cheap until the gun caught on in the US. Now there just aren't many mags left on the market but hopefully this will change. The election paranoia doesn't help either.

The 5.45 mags were never as cheap(or available) as the 7.62 magsWhen I bought mine a couple years back, I bought a dozen and a half of them for $10ea from Centerfire systems.

I didn't realize they had gotten so scarce or expensive.

'74 mags were very inexpensive a few years back. Now the demand has picked up due to all the new '74 carbines being built and supply of the mags has dried up. Blame the "World's Greatest Gun Salesman"...

More than follower shape; mag bodies are different dimensions. AK74 are thinner and have a slightly different seat depth in the receiver.

Tapco makes a great mag for the price, around $15. I know it is not steel but at $15 who cares. I have been using them in my arsenal with no problems.

Here is what I have recently found (bought)

1. Four Circle 21 (Kazanlak) magazines, plus Bulgarian carry pouch. $100.00 at Rguns.

2. Molot Arsenal: 45 round Bakelite RPK magazines. $60.00 apiece from Desert Fox Outfitters. Some of these are red, while some are more of a Texas burnt orange. These have been sanitized for Bulgarian export, but still have some proof marks and mold number.
